I noticed that sometimes at40 would edited certain songs some shows. then play the entire song in others. For example. in a 1980 show. they played sailing but the middle part was cut out. Then in another one they played the whole song. Another one was 78's magnet and steel, same story. I wonder why they did that.. and it was when they were failry still new to charts.

They made those edits because of time constraints; by 1972, pop songs were getting longer. That's why the show went to four hours in October 1978.

Is this from original airings or from the ones you're hearing in the present day? Some of the present-day edits are done by Premiere. A good example of a show where it's tricky to figure out who did what edit is the 12/26/87 show that aired a few weeks ago. Using the cue sheet as a guide, I found that of the seven or so songs that were edited down in some form, three of those were original edit jobs already in the show.
