On this week's presentation from 8/1/81,Casey read a QL (Question Letter) where a listener asked if any singers were teachers before switching to music-Casey said 12 former teachers had top forty hits throughout the rock era-Three more performers can be added to that list:Dennis De Young formerly of Styx & Marv & Rindy Ross of Quarterflash.

He'd actually said 11! On 1/23/1982 Casey Kasem says 16 different people were former school teachers so he added 5 more Brian May, Chuck Panozzo, Dennis DeYoung, Marv & Rindy Ross before playing Quarterflash's "Harden My Heart" at #5.

On this week's presentation from 8/1/81,Casey mentioned that Jefferson Starship,The Bee Gees & The Moody Blues were three acts who broke up & then reformed to hit # 1 on the Billboard album chart-Casey said that "Long Distance Voyager" reached the pole position-However,Casey forgot to mention that "Seventh Sojourn" was # 1 for five weeks in late 1972-early 1973-That album generated a pair of top forty hits:"Isn't Life Strange" & "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock & Roll Band")-Granted The Moodies were still together at that time, but it's worth noting just the same. Speaking of the 1972 Moody Blues, Casey Kasem made a mistake not once, but twice on September 2 and October 21 when he'd said "Nights in White Satin" was from an album released in 1968 called In Search of the Lost Chord when it was actually from Days of Future Passed in 1967!

Did anyone notice that both 80s shows contained non-countdown songs that were used for soft drink commercials? One of the Archive songs on was "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, which was used for the Sunkist orange soda commercials circa 1979. The second Long Distance Dedication on the 1985 show was "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", which, of course, was originally recorded for the Coca Cola commercials in 1971 by the Hillside Singers and, due to its popularity, was re-recorded as a full-length song in two versions - one by the Hillside Singers and the other by the New Seekers, the latter of which was used as the LDD song. I just thought that was a neat coincidence (would have been even weirder if either of the 1970s shows played something like the Beach Boys' "California Girls", which was used in the diet Sunkist commercials from 1980. Here in Austria Sunkist was always with a tetrahedron packaging.

Listening to 8/1/81 on WWIS: Why Capitol released "Don't Want To Wait Anymore", which sounds like an '80s Chicago single, IMO, as the lead single off of The Tubes' "The Completion Backward Principle" LP, instead to the incredibly 'hook-ey' "Talk To Ya Later" has always been a mystery to me. Still remember the band doing the latter song on a fall '81 episode of NBC's late Friday night "SCTV Network 90", with the late, great John Candy as 'Gil Fisher, the Fishin' Musician'. It was also a Casey lite caliber error introed as "Don't Wantcha To Wait Anymore"

Is anyone who's listening to 1981 on KZOY having problems with them? I'm listening to the streaming link on Winamp and since Gemini Dream I keep losing the connection which forces me to restart it only to lose it again.

More on AT40: The 80's 8/1/1981: 1) Casey mentioned in response from a question letter that the record for most weeks in the top 40 in the rock era was a 4 way tie: "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White", "Rock Around the Clock", "So Rare", and "How Deep Is Your Love" each spent 26 weeks in the top 40 as of 1981, in later years the record was broken by "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada (29 weeks) and then "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men (35 weeks). I even bet Ryan Seacrest's AT40 stats have broken a record with the 52 week "Scars" by Papa Roach. 2) The first AT40 Archive song of the show - "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Valdeville Band from December 1966 reminded me of the background music from late 1970's Wendy's TV commercials: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqTSkZXEfbg3) And for Casey's story on Merv Griffin: Years later from 1997-1999 Merv Griffin produced a syndicated weekend kid/teen game show called "Click" which would be hosted by future (and current) AT40 host Ryan Seacrest.

I even bet Ryan Seacrest's AT40 stats have broken a record with the 52 week "Last Resort" by Papa Roach. If memory serves, the record is still 72 weeks, for Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" (7/17/2010 - 11/26/2011).
