"Our House" was later used in an ad campaign for Maxwell House coffee. ...and most recently by an insurance company, can't recall which one.

It's one of two songs in this week's Premiere show not to chart. Crystal Gayle's "You Never Gave Up On Me" is a Long Distance Dedication; it reached #5 on the country chart a year earlier but never made the Hot 100. Has anyone compiled a list of songs that, for whatever the reason (non-charting LDD, one week on survey, etc.), were played just one time on AT40? It seems like that would make an interesting point of reference. Perhaps this has been done, I just don't remember seeing it posted.

Not sure if that thread exists but there was a thread started several years ago--and therefore more than likely buried--of songs that charted but were NEVER played because there was a special that week as well as songs that we will more than likely never hear because they charted the week of a special and/or the week of a guest-hosted show. When the thread was started the latter example was in the "never" category but now I say "more than likely" because Premiere has started playing some guest-hosted shoes as a tribute after the host passes away. The original list also included "Angel" by Rod Stewart, which was on for one week but had its B side played by mistake, but Premiere has since played it as an OE and even noted the error.

Good to see Premiere playing songs like that as op extras. Anyone listening to the radio back in May/June 1987 probably remembers hearing that song a time or two. Like many of those songs that weren't released as singles but got a decent amount of airplay, it did hit on Radio & Records -- peaked at #35 on 6/13/87. I remember hearing that song quite a bit in late spring and very early summer. Was hoping back then it would make AT40...nope. That was before I understood the charts. I have the 5/30 Dees show, in which it debuts at #40. Actually, I was rather surprised when it hit the charts, since, as soon as "Livin' On A Prayer" fell off the charts, they released "Wanted Dead Or Alive", so I had pretty much written it off. Due to the fact that it was not released as a single, as well as the fact that the song had been played as an album cut on the radio for several months is very likely why the song only got as high as #35, but I was surprised that it made it at all. The real corker was its performance on Scott Shannon's Rockin' America Top 30 Countdown. Through the summer of 1987, the chart for that show was becoming more and more like R&R, but "Never Say Goodbye" was definitely the exception. Even when it was long gone from the R&R chart, it kept taking baby steps up the chart, all the way up to #15, where it peaked the last week of July. Not sure what the deal was there, but I wasn't complaining, as it was a great song!

"Girls On Film" hit #5 in Britain in 1981; it wasn't a single, at least not a charting one, in the US, but became popular due in large part to its video ( a censored version of which had to be shown on MTV) and remains a fan favourite so its inclusion here makes sense.
Wasn't the uncensored version shown after midnight on MTV?

Just over 40 years since his only American hit "Chariots Of Fire - Titles" reached #1 following a (record-setting) slow ascent, Vangelis has passed away at age 79. RIP.

Optional extras for May 21, 1983:Hour #1: "Girls On Film" - Duran Duran (NR) Hour #2: "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" - A Flock Of Seagulls (#69) Hour #3: "Come Dancing" - The Kinks (#50) Hour #4: "Our House" - Madness (#52) "Girls On Film" hit #5 in Britain in 1981; it wasn't a single, at least not a charting one, in the US, but became popular due in large part to its video (a censored version of which had to be shown on MTV) and remains a fan favourite so its inclusion here makes sense. However, "Hungry Like a Wolf" and "Rio" were both originally released in 1982 without charting. "Rio" is on my list of songs that sound like a top 10 hit which fell short of the mark. Casey's mention of the first single release in the UK(which he does not identify) is not a reference to "Girls on Film" but "Planet Earth". Girls was their third UK release.

I think I only saw the uncensored version on USA Network's late-might show "Night Flight".

"Girls On Film" by Duran Duran shows very clearly how our society is changing the way it deals with sexuality. While the video of the hit was still scandalized in the 80s and was in fact severely restricted by the authorities, nowadays you can watch this version as a matter of course. A few naked breasts were enough to cause a scandal in the early 80s. In retrospect, "Girls On Film" by Duran Duran stands mainly for the sexually charged video. People forget that "Girls On Film" was the first successful hit for Duran Duran in England.
The band had a bit of a bumpy start: "Planet Earth" didn´t chart worth mentioning, "Careless Memories" only went to #37 in the U.K. It wasn´t until "Girls on Film" made it to #5 in the U.K. and had chart success in other countries.
Ironically, it was the band Duran Duran´s decision to release just "Girls On Film" as their third single. The label had been against the band on the second single, "Careless Memories," and was thus responsible for the flop. The band needed a success, and decided to release "Girls On Film". After the song did well on the radio, they decided to kick it up a notch with the video, and went for scandal. There´s mud wrestling and close-ups of female breasts. That was quite enough for censorship and age restriction in 1981. Duran Duran got corresponding restrictions on the sale of the VHS tape. Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon regretted this aggravation, because the actual message, the criticism of the exploitative modeling industry, was lost.

And we don't know if "Girls on Film" by Duran Duran ever made a 1981 American Bandstand "Rate-a-Record" segment (Though I remember some charted on AT40 songs making the "Rate-a-Record" segment such as "Funky Town" by Lipps, Inc., "The One Thing" by INXS, "New Song" by Howard Jones, and "Take on Me" by A-Ha - But that's another thread for another day...)
