Well, 7/4/87 is definitely the curveball pick, though if Premiere is going to bend the rules then this would be the time to do so, given the slim pickings for that particular weekend (unless they got creative with the dates) and the fact that 1987 was the main show only once in the first half of the year. 1982, 84, and 85 are all ripe for July appearances, and there's the question of if they'll go back to 1988 while they still can. What about 7/16/1983? Could happen as well, though 1982 and 1985 are years that haven't been played in longer than 1983. Not that it necessarily matters to Premiere. (And I erred above, forgetting that 1984 is on tap for this coming weekend. I was thinking of 1987 which is up for the following week, the first of July.)

I also think 7/21/84 has a chance even though we have 1984 coming this weekend. It last played as a standalone in 2010.

June 23, 1984 optional extras:
Hour #1: "Missing You" - John Waite (#89; debuted) Hour #2: "Panama" - Van Halen (#52; highest debut) Hour #3: "State Of Shock" - The Jacksons featuring Mick Jagger (NR) Hour #4: "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming (Too Good To Be True)" - Jermaine Jackson & Michael Jackson (NR)
"Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" didn't make the Hot 100 as it wasn't issued as a commercial 45, but got lots of airplay, reaching #6 in Radio & Records.

Premiere finally picks "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming", which as mkarns said, was a top 10 hit on Radio & Records but didn't chart on the Hot 100 since Epic--MJ's label at the time--wouldn't allow it to be released as a single. A song that falls in the same category as Madonna's "Get Into the Groove"--a big radio hit that never got played on AT40.

Too bad it wasn't an "old" recording for a previous label that had only been re-discovered - then that label could have just circumvented Epic and released it on their own. Case in point: The song that debuts this week at #40.

An instrumental version was the B side of "Dynamite," and the original vocal version was the B side of "Do What You Do."

I have a feeling it's going to be a "B" show with 7/3/1982 as the "A"; it was only about a month ago or so where the show date they announced ended up being a "B" to another year's "A". (If not, I guess I get a break that weekend.) KOLA hasn't to my knowledge played B's to 1982 A's; when they do play B's they usually accompany 1980-81 A's. And since they played 1981 last week I don't think they'd decide against 1982. (They did go for the B when 1980 was the A in May, but the music changed a lot from 1980-82.) Assuming that 1987 is the A, it's likely Premiere's only official offering for the 4th of July weekend. Not only does 1987 no longer get B's, but jdelachjr2002 says that there are apparently no specials on tap that weekend for either decade. Which does not preclude individual affiliates like WTOJ or WPNC from playing specials of their own choosing...

Yes, Premiere often offers AT40 70s/80s specials on July 4th weekend, one of several such weekends in the year, but apparently not this year.
I've heard, though, that WPNC will have a 4 day marathon from next Tuesday to Friday (6/29-7/2), airing mostly year end countdowns and a few others, from 6 AM-midnight each day. Not yet sure exactly which shows will be played when.

Perhaps that is why they chose a show that was just aired two years ago, in case radio stations want to do their own thing, like WPNC is apparently doing and thus, their listeners won't really be missing out if they went with a show that hasn't been aired forever

^^^ Maybe they'll play some 90s/early 00s shows like they did last summer.

They’ve been offering specials for years now and they’re not gonna stop on the most important holiday of the show’s history.

It was a strange choice to play the album version of The Reflex in its first week at #1.
