Interesting--as you may have read in my earlier exchange on this thread with kahunaburger, KOMJ picked up the show after KQKQ (which aired AT40 from April 1984 until early 1989) dumped the show and eventually picked up Casey's Top 40 instead. KOMJ went on the air in early 1988 with a format of 1960's, 70's and 80's music - a very common format now, but pretty new and unique at the time - but eventually evolved into CHR by '89. It's call letters did change to KXKT (change of ownership probably?) in early 1990, but it remained as one of Omaha's top 40 stations until the late summer/fall of 1992 when it flipped to country, which is still its format today. Ah...I'd just assumed that the call letter change went along with the format change. Wiki's not exactly forthcoming with much info on KXKT, only having a former callsign history off to the side. I'll make that adjustment to the listing, but there's a date of sign-in for you. Interesting though that 4/8/89 had two stations with competitors airing Casey's Top 40, with one lasting long as a CHR station and the other not so much. OZ-FM in Newfoundland was mentioned on AT40 numerous times during the 1980s and 1990s. OZ-FM used to play top 40 music during those days, but since July 2009 they changed to modern and classic rock format. OZ-FM really lives up to its slogan "The Rock of The Rock" now for sure! They had a mention on 4/8/89, too. Seems they've had some recent infamy - look back on the previous page and you'll see what I mean.

How about another Christmas Shadoe Stevens-era post ... and I'll go with Dec. 23, 1989? Suggested since we'll be hearing the final regular AT40 countdown of the 1970s this weekend, so ... only fair to feature the last regular AT40 of the 1980s.

OK. Here's our second '89 slate: Whatever happened to...? (December 23, 1989) - KUBE Seattle, WA - They picked up these call letters on 4/2/82, having been a Top 40 since 3/17/81. However, by January 1992, they'd shifted to more of a CHR/Rhythmic station, which they still are.
- WIFC Wassau, WI - Here's another continuously long-running Top 40 station! They've been a Top 40 station since August 1969. They're said to lean more toward rock songs than rhythmic or urban ones. They don't appear to have the current AT40, however.
- C93 Summersville, WV - WCWV. Launching on March 13, 1983, here was an AC station playing the show. I'm a bit surprised they still had it at this time, giving the changing direction of Top 40 music in general. In October 2006, they changed to Southern Gospel, which they still are today.
- WGH Newport News, VA - AM and FM at this time, though the simulcast was to end the next year. The AM station's Wiki has a link to a history website on the station. On October 5, 2009, their current format of Black Gospel began. The FM station is now Country and might have been since 1991 (the AM station switched to Country in '91 - theirs just didn't last). By the way, the FM station is referred to as a "grandfathered" station. What's a "grandfathered" station? This page will tell you right here: "Superpower" Grandfathered FM's
- WEYQ Marietta, OH - Well...after conferring with HotACGuru and learning that this was also Q102, it seems the only thing that might've really changed here is their callsign. They now go by WRVB and don't have station history on their page, but they're still a Top 40 today, and they do still have AT40.
- KGY Olympia, WA - Also mentioned by Casey as "one of the nation's oldest stations" on January 23, 1988 - and he's not kidding! They've been broadcasting since 1922. Here's also a rare example of an AM station still part of the family heading into the 90s; their sister FM station wasn't launched until 1992. Both stations are AC today, though I'm not sure if that's what they were back then. Unfortunately, I also have to report that they air Rick's classic shows these days rather than AT40's.
- Quad 106 Sacramento, CA - I'll do a sort of "double duty" here since this is also an entry for this weekend's 12/26/87 show. They were KWOD at the time of both that show and this one. Shortly after the '87 show, moving into 1988, the ratings here began to fall sharply. In 1991, they took on a Top 40/modern rock hybrid, which became full Alternative Rock in 1993. This worked, as ratings returned, beating all other rock stations in the market at one time in '95. Spring of 2005 saw a transition to Modern AC, until four years later on May 22, 2009, when they flipped to KZBC, an all-90s station. On September 2, earlier this year, they flipped to Rhythmic AC. Finally, just two weeks ago on December 9, they flipped to Hot AC.
- FM 101 Lahaina, HI - From one of the nation's oldest stations to one of the nation's newest (at this time), here's a station in its infancy - literally! 1989 was the year they signed on, as KLHI (thanks for adding that info), playing AC - so yes, here was another AC station carrying the show. By 1996, they'd shifted to a Modern AC format on their way to going full-on modern rock. In 2006, they moved to Honolulu, trading frequencies and callsigns with 92.5 KORL; the KORL letters remain here today. From there, they alternated between multi-cultural programming during the day and smooth jazz on nights and weekends, but shifted fully to smooth jazz on June 9, 2008. Just 12 days ago on the 12th, however, they became the first station in all of the United States to have FOUR HD subchannels broadcasting on one frequency - one duplicating the analog signal and the other three feeding different translators. The main channel is now a Pop station, with Smooth Jazz moving to HD2, HD3 having Korean Pop, and HD4 having Japanese Pop! Bet they never imagined anything like this heading into new decades...
- KXDX Stuttgart, AR - Arkansas radio is becoming notoriously difficult to find information on! I can't find information on a former station with these call letters, and the only stations licensed to Stuttgart are an AM/FM pair, KWAK. The AM station is Sports Talk, while the FM is Oldies.
- CKEC New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada - Currently a Hot AC station. Here's a strange example of a station that stayed on the AM band well into the first decade of the 2000s! It was only on December 11, 2007, that they began broadcasting on FM - simulcasting on both for 90 days, before leaving AM behind for good. They were originally on 1320 AM, now they're on 94.1 FM.
- WMHE Toledo, OH - I have a slight correction to make to "The New Choice" from April 8 - WVKS was the call letters they'd change to and still use today, but upon further research, it turns out they wouldn't adopt those until 1990. As mentioned there, though, WMHE, which actually stands for "Wired Music Hillebrand Electronics" (as in station founder, William A. Hillebrand), was the call letters they had prior to that - so, this is the same station from back in April. Incidentally, they were founded on October 14, 1957, and Hillebrand saw the value of FM radio right from the get-go.
- Q101 Harrisonburg, VA - WQPO. Here's an interesting format change. Apparently they used to be an AC station, and at one point were a Hot AC. But, on May 8, 1998, they changed to Top 40, which they still are today. Like WIFC, they don't have the current AT40, though, either.
- WGAW Gardner, MA - These days, it's Talk radio during the week, and ESPN Radio on the weekends.
That should be all of them, now...

WIFC used to have the Seacrest AT40's for a while, but now WLJY 96.7 FM out of Plover, Wisconsin carries the show from 6-10 AM Central Time Saturday mornings. WLJY hasn't been playing the shows however because they have gone all-Xmas too.

Regarding the FM101 in Hawaii, the call letters were KLHI, which now belong to another radio station.

Whatever happened to...? (December 26, 1987) - WZYP Athens, AL - Carrying a bit of a Hot AC lean, they've been a Top 40 station since June 10, 1980. And sadly, they don't still have AT40 on the schedule.
- All-Hit K95, Lufkin, TX - They, on the other hand, do have the current show. First signing on on May 15, 1986, it seems that they haven't changed formats since then.
- KSER Searcy, AR - There's only one FM station in the town of Searcy, KWCK, and they're Country. And they don't even have a Wiki! Sigh...how do so many small-town Arkansas stations get mentioned on AT40??
- Q104 Kansas City, MO - Fending off many upstarts, KEBQ was the sole dominant Top 40 station by the end of the 80s in Kansas City. Unfortunately, in February 1993, they made the surprise decision to flip to Country, which is a crowded market in KC, and which they still are. That move left KC without a Top 40 station for the rest of the year, but two other stations have since filled that void. Unfortunately, those two air Rick Dees and Billy Bush.
- WFCB-FM, the "small town" station that petitioned John Cougar Mellencamp to play there - They used to be at 94.3, but in 2002, they swapped frequencies with 93.3 WKKJ, moving from Chilicothe to Ashville in the process. Soon after that, they changed call letters to WLZT. Recognize those letters? You should - they were listed as a 70s affiliate! But, just three months ago on September 29, they changed letters again, this time to WODC, which has now been noted in the 70s stations thread (thanks pizzzza). Nice to hear, though, that a station with the kind of story told in this week's show is still a member of the family. By the way...they're Clear Channel-owned these days, and their WNCI (told on 11/16/85) has the present-day show for the same general area that WODC is in. Also, you know how Chilicothe was considered a "small town" in this show? Well, their estimated population as of 2008 was 22,296. Ashville's (2000 census)? 3,174.
- FM107 Key West, FL - Billed as "the nation's southern-most station", they're Alternative Rocker WIIS today. I wonder if they flipped sometime around 1990, as that's when Key West's current pop station, WEOW, joined the format. That said, it's not quite clear whether 107 was AC or Pop at the time of this show; the only historical info I have actually comes from the Media in Key West page, rather than the station's own page, and it just says the station signed on as AC in 1982.
- Q102 Cincinatti, OH - WKRQ. They've been a Top 40 station since 1970, though they were WKRC for the first two years. They're said to be more of an "Adult" Top 40, yet still more of a Top 40 station than most Adult-leaning ones are. That said, Mediabase has them on the Hot AC panel rather than the Pop panel - and I blame Clear Channel-owned rival WKFS for this, in spite of the fact that WKFS has about one-fifth of the broadcast reach that WKRQ does.
- KINN Alamogordo, NM - Now KZZX, Country. Here's a case of an indirect callsign swap - this station became KZZX on 7/11/95. The station that now has the KINN call letters, however, signed on with the KZZX ones - but became KINN four years prior, on 9/1/91. That makes me think KINN flipped away from Top 40 (or whatever they were) before '95.
- Quad 106 Sacramento, CA - As noted for December 23, 1989, the ratings began to fall sharply for this station shortly after this show. See that week's shows for the rest of the story.
- Power Hits K98, Austin, TX - KHFI. At the time of this show, they were at 98.1. They were known for HUGE ratings in Austin during the 80s. In September 1990, they relocated to 96.7, where they remain today, complete with current AT40. Of note is that by 1992, KHFI was one of the first large market stations purchased by Clear Channel, at the time much smaller than they are now.
- Yes 99.5 FM Sault Ste. Marie, MI - No changes here; this station became WYSS Yes FM on March 6, 1986, and that's what they still are today. Notably, they play both the current AT40 and Rick Dees Weekly Top 40.
- 95.5 WOVV West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce, FL - This one tried - twice - to leave the format...but they just couldn't do it! In October 1992, they flipped to AC. But that only lasted for six months, as in April '93, they went back to Pop again. At 4:40 P.M. on 11/22/95, they abruptly became Country as WCLB, and flirted with the WXFG letters for 8 months. However, after 5 P.M. on August 14, 1998, with a 9,550 song marathon (!!), they became WLDI and went back to pop again, this time to stay! And yes, this one does have the current AT40 on the schedule.
- KOJM Havre, MT - Now Classic Hits.
- KKRD Wichita, KS - Their then-program director hired the then-#1 Wichita morning radio show host in 1983 from their crosstown rival, and...in one book, the two literally switched rankings, planting KKRD at #1 in the market, which they would hold until 2000. In 2004, they swapped frequencies with their sister classic rock station at 96.3, so essentially that's where this station is now. They now by go KZCH. AT40? Not proven, but they're Clear Channel-owned, so...probably.
- WGH - Also later featured on December 23, 1989, and told there.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah...aw, whatever you're celebrating, Happy Holidays! (EDIT 12-27: All stations accounted for.)

Radio Albacete, Albacete, Spain , has been mentioned in this weekend 80s show. Dec 26, 1987, during a lot of shows form 1988, Casey was mentioning some Spanish AT40 stations.

Mike, whadaya know about (drum roll) ... May 6, 1989?
Brian
P.S. – Still have to post Dec. 22, 1979. P.P.S. – Great job on the December 1989 show.

P.S. – Still have to post Dec. 22, 1979. I don't typically listen to the 70s shows, though I will say that this one may be a forthcoming exception. Does anyone want to fill in as a regular 70s contributor? With regards to 5/6/89, let me be clear: 4/8/89 is the only weekly 1989 show that I have, so I have no idea of station mentions of any other week.
