You know how every week, so many of AT40's affiliates were announced as "great radio stations" during the show? Well, have you ever wondered whatever happened to them in the years since? I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing this become a weekly feature. As a for instance...I'll list the (domestic) stations featured on this week's November 16, 1985 show. Stations outside the U.S. or Canada are tricky (there weren't any Canadian stations announced this week). Whatever happened to...? (November 16, 1985) - KOKR - Is now a Country station.
- KKFM - Is now a Classic Rock station.
- WKTI (FM) - Remained a Pop station until late 2005. From 1999 until then, they were battling WXSS for audience. From there until 11/6/08, they evolved into more of a Hot AC station. On that date, they became "Lake FM", which they are now; an ID change to their current WLWK was approved a week later.
- WQZY - Is now a Country station.
- KGFX - Is now an AC station. Is currently owned by the Dakota Radio Group; their station KJBI is a 70s affiliate (see also the affiliates thread; seems I found them in the process of researching this!).
- KEBQ - I think this is the station that is now KACO, a Country station.
- KIQX - Is now a Hot AC station, though Wiki says they're more of a mix of Hot AC and some Variety.
- WNCI - They dabbled with AC in 1993, but other than that, they've been a Pop station since 1970 - and they still are! And yes, they're an affiliate of the current AT40 as well. (The more things change...the more they stay the same. )
- KGRO - Was this announced as an AM station? I didn't make a note of it either way. The current KGRO, 1230 AM, is an AC station in Pampa, TX.
- KRCH - Is now a Classic Rock station.
- Q105 AM/FM - Tampa, FL - Well, the AM station is now a Radio Disney station; nuff said. As for the FM station...yes, it's Scott Shannon's station. They're now Classic Hits. I suggest Wiki-ing WRBQ and their later rival, WFLZ, for more on them than I could say here.
New to the American Top 40 family this week: - KKRQ - Is now a Classic Rock station.
- The FOX, FM 102 - Abilene, TX - Is KHXS, and they're now "The Bear", another Classic Rock-er.
Feel free to correct me in case I may be way off on any of these. I'll do the stations from 11/11/72 next.

I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in seeing this become a weekly feature. Recently, I've been wondering what ever happened to the stations mentioned during the shows, so I'm definitely interested in seeing this continue. Feel free to contribute if you'd like to! By no means am I seeking to be the sole director of all this info. Whatever happened to...? (November 11, 1972) - KXOL - I need help with this one. Both the current AM and FM stations lead me to stations that don't seem to have a history that goes back to '72.
- WSGN (AM) - Believe it or not, it was 1972 that trouble began to brew here. Middle-of-the-road station WBRC was sold and became Top 40 WERC. In 1977, WKXX (now WBPT) debuted, replacing WERC. Ratings began to decline, and by 1981, WSGN was AC. Enter WMJJ in late 1982 (sound familiar? They carried the show back-in-the-day, too!), which marked the beginning of the end for current hit music on WSGN. These days, they're WAGG, a Gospel station.
- WGH - Also Gospel.
- WCFL (AM) - Poster dth1971 on the Pulse board revealed that they only carried AT40 from July to December of '72. On April 29, 1987, by now a Religious station, they changed call letters to WLUP, though the WCFL letters remain on the outside office wall to this day (or so Wiki states). These days, they're WMVP, an ESPN Radio affiliate.
- KLOM - I need help with this one, too. Do they no longer exist (are they now silent)?
- WLNC - They air AC, Oldies, and what's called a "Carolina Beach" format.
- WSLW - Sports.
- KJRB (#15 Danny O'Keefe's hometown station) - Now currently News/Talk.
- KHIG - See KLOM (need help here, too).
- KBMW - Country. They're in Wahpeton, ND, though - KEGK's got 'em covered these days.
- WHEB - Before he was nationally famous, Tom Bergeron gained a following here. These days, WHEB is a Rock station. They're said to be remembered for their Saturday morning airing of AT40.
I have the stations listed for this week's 70s show since I opted to listen to this one, but most of the time I won't be listening to 70s. Also feel free to dust off station listings from previously-aired shows (I may do that myself with other shows I have recorded).

It'll be interesting to see how many have stayed Top 40. I know one, but I'll wait until it gets announced one day.

It'll be interesting to see how many have stayed Top 40. I know one, but I'll wait until it gets announced one day. WIOG, my own local station, signed in as an affiliate on 1/16/82 (the first weekly 80s show this year). They were on 106.3 then; they moved over to the much larger signal on 102.5 in September 1986. A "free money" giveaway apparently combined with the larger signal to give them a ratings boost so large that they were said to be the highest-rated station in the entire country that Fall. (Wiki has a source for this claim, but it appears to be password-protected.) I don't know how long they carried AT40 for, but I don't think they ever carried it during Casey's run in 1998-2003 (They carried the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 for at least a couple years there, they abruptly dropped it in 2000 - no idea why.). They carry the current AT40, and have from the week that Ryan Seacrest became the regular host.

For Saskatchewan stations that I've heard introduced on AT40:
CKCK in Regina (which was AM when they carried AT40 in the 80's) is now on FM. It's a Jack-FM station now.
CKBI in Prince Albert is now a country station.

Ahhh, KIQX. I grew up about 45 miles away, about 5 miles outta range of their tantalizing signal. Therefore I was forced to listen to KISZ which was further away, but they had a 100k watt FM blow torch.

Great topic - I often search for a station as I hear Casey calling a group out. I love the history, it would be fun to keep the "follow-up/updates" going.

Well, my boy atfanmpls could probably chime in about our current hometown KDWB, but it is still a mainstream pop station, but that caters to the teenybopper crowd. I believe they still air AT40 with Seacrest.
As for my stations growing up, KGOR (Rock 100) in Omaha, NE carried the show from 1977 to 82, but flipped to an oldies format in 1988. The station that picked up AT40 from KGOR was KQKQ (Sweet 98) - they carried show from 1983 to '88 or early '89, then dropped it due to a ratings slide after Shadoe took over. They now go by Q98 and play a "modern hit music" format.
Another station I am familiar with - KRNQ (Q102) in Des Moines had several station call outs by Casey during the initial AT40 run - it is now one of those lame "Star" stations (Star 102.5) that markets as the "at work radio station". I.E., they play the same reshuffled playlist every day.

WLAP (630 AM), where I first heard AT40, is now a news/talk station. WLAP-FM (94.5 FM) broadcast the show in the 80s. It is now WMXL ("Mix 94") and has a Hot AC format.

Watertown's 790AM WTNY was welcomed as a 'new station' (even though it had been on 790AM for a year or three at that point) on the January 16, 1982 show right before the #10 song, Juice Newton's "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)".(That may have been the same break where CRZ's WIOG was welcomed, now that I think of it... it was one of six stations 'new stations welcomed')
WTNY AM carried AT40 until the first week of August 1986 when they replaced it with Dick Clark's Countdown America. In September 1986, WTNY FM (93.5 Hot Power Hits Z93) picked up AT40 and carried it at least until Winter 1993/4 when I left the area for Army Basic Training. Z93FM (93.3) is the current 'Classic Hits' Stephens Media station in town and the logical 'heir' to the WTNY-FM legacy.
As early as late 1986, WTNY AM was slowly turning into an all-talk format, as it is today. I don't recall if WTNY-FM was ever welcomed by Casey, but I have a vague recollection of Shadoe giving Z93 a shout-out.

To add to the Omaha stations, the original AT40 subscriber in that market was KOIL - "The Mighty 1290" as it was called back in the day. Very interesting history about KOIL - it was really one of the first Top 40 music stations in Omaha and became well-known for being a starting point for DJ's that ended up in some of the major markets. The station's ownership then got into some real trouble and had to shut down in September 1976. After that it was never quite the same and has undergone several format changes over the years - country, talk radio, sports, etc. The station even swapped frequencies and is now at 1180 instead of 1290. KOIL had the show from sometime in early 1971 (I believe) until it was shut down in '76. KGOR took over AT40 in Omaha then - which may have been for the better since it was FM. BTW - for anyone who has Pete B's 70's book, he includes a letter from KOIL's Scott Carpenter in response to some questions about AT40. Guessing Pete maybe picked up the show all the way over from KOIL to Indiana back in the day!

After 10 months AT40 was switched over to it's sister FM station Rock 100 KGOR where it remained until early 1982 when ABC took over Watermark. From February '82-July '82 AT40 was on WOW-AM until they changed to a country format. AT40 was off Omaha airwaves until April '84 when it was picked up by Sweet 98 KQKQ where it remained into the 90's when I stopped listening due to Hot 100 not being as chart anymore.

OZ-FM in Newfoundland was mentioned on AT40 numerous times during the 1980s and 1990s. OZ-FM used to play top 40 music during those days, but since July 2009 they changed to modern and classic rock format. OZ-FM really lives up to its slogan "The Rock of The Rock" now for sure!
