too bad either the Dr. John or Alice Cooper OPTIONAL EXTRA could have been replaced by "Soul Makossa" to honor the late Manu Dibango. Yes, but "Makossa" didn't debut on the Hot 100 until late June and peaked in August, so perhaps we'll be getting a show from its 3-week Top 40 run. It was huge in some markets -- Top Ten on WABC in NYC where it was a big club hit.

Yeah, the early-70's shows are oftentimes boring. I could not imagine being..."giddy"...about them. ? You're too young too understand. I'm 62. This is the music of my youth. My musdical 'sweet spot' is mostly 1965-1982. I probably feel much less warmth for the music of your youth, but I understand why you would feel differently and would not make snide remarks about your preferences. Can't you do the same? I am only 3 years younger than you (just turned 59) and enjoy the same era of music (maybe up to the mid-'80s). However, I am a pre-MTV sort of guy--before the mid-'60s, most of the music is too maudlin. After 1986, it gets a bit too salacious/nasty for me, though I can listen to a late-'80s AT40. After that, there is too much hair metal and hard rap for me. By 1989, I was listening to Dick Clark's AC "Countdown America," which was a regular part of my Sundays until mid-1997, when the station stopped airing it.

Listening to the 5/5/73 show on WSQL has been kind of odd. Was thoroughly enjoying it until the top 10 started. From that point on there is not a single song that I really want or need to hear (because it's a 'lost 45'). Either songs I never cared about or ones that have been played to death over the decades. Oh well, two+ really good hours...

Of that group, "Little Willy" is probably my favourite..."The Cisco Kid", "Drift Away", "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", and "Stuck In the Middle of You" are good but arguably overplayed. Same maybe for "Frankenstein", despite the instrumental skills. "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" has sort of become a universal "welcome home!" song for soldiers or those in trouble; "The Twelfth of Never" was an OK but unneeded cover of a Johnny Mathis classic; "Sing" should have stayed on Sesame Street (though I like the Carpenters otherwise); and "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" has survived with the help of Reba McEntire's 1990s cover.

Pretty much agree. "Willy" and "Frank" I can still enjoy. Liked your four overplayed songs in '73, bought the 45s of 3 of them. Just don't need to hear any of the four any more. Can take or leave Donny's remake (at least it was his first song sung in a post-puberty key), never liked "Tie a Yellow Ribbon...", "Sing" is my lest-favorite Carpenters hit, which leaves the song I've loathed for 47 years. Totally with Sonny Bono on this one, he was right to reject it for Cher. Just an awful, awful song, with plot holes in the story line big enough to drive a truck through.

Take no offense to this mga707, but I like this show better than last week's 70's show. I have debated on which rock instrumental was better-"Frankenstein" or "Hocus Pocus"? I would probably go with the latter.

I would probably go with the latter. I always enjoyed Hocus Pocus by Focus--but never knew the song was sort of an inside joke; making 'fun' of the pretentious of rock music.
By the way, speaking of songs not aging well, I remember buying most of Al Green's Top 10 hits during the 1970's and it wasn't until later that I realized most of his songs sorta sound alike.

Hey Ken would you consider the following thought.... It would be interesting to have for the 50th Anniversary the 753-1 AT40 show with mono to stereo by Ken Martin.... ;-)

And Focus' follow-up, "Sylvia" is another great instrumental -- one of my favorite "how the heck did this not become a hit"s of the '70s. It was huge in Europe.
