Another early source for music videos wasn't even a real program: The fictional 'Gerry Todd Show' on the pre-NBC syndicated "SCTV" (one of the greatest TV shows of all time, IMO). First place I ever saw the Talking Heads' "Once In a Lifetime" video, sometime during the '80-'81 season.

Am looking forward to the upcoming 11/13/76 show for the simple reason that I have never heard it, not even when new. At the time I was listening to AT40 on an FM station out of Phoenix (120 or so miles away), KBBC. If I put my portable radio in a certain place and had the antenna just so, I could pick them up on Sunday mornings for the show. Heard the show the previous Sunday, when 'Rok'n Me' made it somewhat unexpected move to the #1 spot, and was interested to see if it would stay there another week. But no AT 40 that next Sunday morning--KBBC had dropped the show! Yes, I was ticked off. Never would nave guessed that ol' Rod the Mod would jump up from #8 to #1 for his seven (or eight, if one counts the 'dead week') stay at the top. Wouldn't know it for a few months until I finally found out that my University library had a 'Billboard' subscription. You sound just like me back then! I had to position my receiver in a certain part of the room to pick up the only station that played AT 40 very early Saturday mornings - it was about 40 miles away for me with a very weak signal. It was either that try to stay awake to listen to WCFL in the middle of the night on my transistor radio - such fun days/times looking back - wouldn't trade it for the world. In addition, I too stumbled upon my local community college library and discovered they had Billboard Magazine as well - was that a shock! I recall as a kid having an green transistor radio and falling asleep many a night attempting to listen to the station farther-est away from my bedroom. It was always interesting to hear songs that I enjoyed being played at stations hundreds of miles away. I recall hearing the Top 100 of 1975, from AT40, being played over several stations during the Christmas Holiday break--one of my earliest memories of hearing an entire year end countdown.
One of my other fondest memories was getting a letter at one of the station's I worked at in Alabama from someone wanting us to send the listener something from the station, confirming that they heard us broadcasting in a neighboring state.
I always enjoy this board as it brings back such great memories (AT40 related or not)--for us music/radio fans.

How about when TBS played music videos all night long and Friday Night Videos aired on NBC and their very first video was Beat It By MJ. Without looking for it on line, Which came first, America's Top 10 or MTV? America's Top 10 was on before MTV -- in fact, the first place I saw music videos regularly on a show was on AT10. I remember first watching AT10 in the summer of 1980 -- about a year before MTV launched. It was on Saturdays around noon on my local station. Also the first time I got to see what Casey looked like (which as always, is different that what you envision in your mind).

Can't understand why MTV & VH-1 abandoned their original formats & have opted for reality shows-That's a head scratcher. You could say that like many things, it all comes down to the almighty dollar (money, ratings, etc.). Reality TV and the other trash that MTV began to show during the 90's presumably drew more eyes to the channel than 24/7 videos did (though I'm not afraid to admit I've had no interest in almost all of the shows they've put out over time). I'm glad they've offered MTV Classic over the years and show videos almost 24/7 like the old days, including a lot of old school stuff. But they've added channels before to show videos and ended up changing over to another outlet for their trashy shows or old movie reruns (see both VH1 and MTV2). At this point it does make sense--too many other places (namely YouTube) where a person can go to watch any video he/she wants. The thing you can't get as well from that is the songs offered that you didn't know about and could discover for yourself. That's one of the things that made MTV great back in the 80's, and I would argue that much of the golden era of 80's music was a result of the introduction of new/unknown songs and artists that MTV provided.

I enjoyed watching "Pop Up Video" & "Behind The Music" on VH-1. Those were both great shows. And they were actually about music! If MTV/VH1 was going to move toward airing shows and movies, you wish they would've at least not completely sold out where they came from.

My God that was an AWFUL edit of the optional extra by Elton John, "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." Just heard it on PAC.

My God that was an AWFUL edit of the optional extra by Elton John, "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." Just heard it on PAC. You may not be aware of this, but these shows have time restraints. The optional songs are often edited so they don’t have to trim the original show. Actually the edit was pretty good. It was shorter but I didn’t hear any glitches.

Listening to the 1976 show and Casey mentioned that Rob Parissi of Wild Cherry wondered how they were going to follow up Play That Funky Music 😄
