Am struck by how heavily 'soulful' the first hour of this week's show is: Eight of the songs in the hour were also on the R&B chart, probably all of them charting higher on that chart than on the 'Hot 100'. Also a ninth song, 'In the Midnight Hour', that is a pop remake of an R&B classic. For me personally, that's what makes the music of the 70s so special..... The variety on any given week....soul, pop, country and rock back-to-back-to-back, with an occasional novelty song thrown in. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever experience that again in our lifetimes. I fear you are right. As far back as 1990, I was lamenting the lack of variety in contemporary hit radio playlists. In a letter to Billboard, I stated that pop playlists aired mostly power ballads, predictable dance tracks (the stale back-end of freestyle), and R&B/hip-hop. Nowadays, even 1990 is looking good, and even songs about romance can't make it too much. At least in '90, love songs still had a chance on pop radio. Almost every song sounds like EDM or hip-hop, and most are about loveless sex. However, I am age 58 (twice the age I was when I wrote the 1990 letter) and am probably unable to objectively comment on the contemporary pop scene since I never listen to CHR by choice anymore.

Any word on whether Ken/WTOJ will give us a supersized 1978 alternative? I have a Beatles special about Abbey Road airing at noon so this show can't run long. If I do run that version it will have to start EARLY. BTW, there are 2 Beatles specials. One about Abbey Road and then another one about the Paul is Dead hoax with all the clues laid out and played.

Has 4hr 1979 ever been a 'B' before? Stations like Hoggy will be a good bet for AT33, but all 4hrs are going to be hard to find. 1979 had 3 "B" shows in 2015. WPAC should have 4-hour show on Saturday & Sunday. KOKZ is a good bet. I would not be surprised if WQSL airs the show next Thursday night, despite not having a history of airing "B" shows.

Has 4hr 1979 ever been a 'B' before? Stations like Hoggy will be a good bet for AT33, but all 4hrs are going to be hard to find. The first few months that Premiere started offering 'B' shows in the 70's series (July 2012), they offered 7/14/79 (which was the first ever 'B' show that wasn't a special of some sort) and 10/20/79. IIRC, there were hardly any stations playing 'B' shows yet since it was a new concept for either series, which mean it was really hard (if not impossible) to find stations that would play all four hours of those shows. There was a brief period in 2015 when 4/21/79 and 8/4/79 were also offered, as well as the Disco Hits Special. I believe that by then, KOKZ and one or two other stations did play all four hours of the 1979 'B' shows. Next week's show will be the first 1979 show other than those aforementioned to be offered as a 'B'.

This is making me wonder if they go with 10/20/79 in a couple weeks (with something from '74-'77 as the 'B') or 11/3/79 the first weekend in November. It is getting close to four months since the last 1979 'A' show airing...

That 2014 show should have been a mono2stereo conversion, after 8/12 and 9/9 were done in stereo. This is a repeat as a A selection? Can somebody please confirm? TIA!

I don't know what extras Premiere added to 10/7/72 previously, but my guesses for this time:
Alice Cooper - "Elected" (#67 highest debut) Helen Reddy - "I Am Woman" (#46) Lobo - "I'd Love You To Want Me" (#44)

I hope they don't wait too long to feature 1979 as an "A" show, as that would decrease the likelihood of getting one of the yet-unaired shows from the late part of that year (11/24 or 12/1).

I miss CountdownMike's station. They would be a sure shot for 4hr 1979. The 10/13 features the rarest of all themes. Which is? Don't leave us hanging...

Optional extras for September 30, 1978… Hour #1: Just What I Needed – The Cars Hour #2: Straight On – Heart Hour #3: Baby Hold On – Eddie Money Listening to KLFM (Australia), and for Hour 1 "My Best Friend's Girl" was the optional extra, and announced as such by Larry. Maybe it was changed because Ric Ocasek sang it, and not "Just What I Needed"? And Larry didn't intro the Eddie Money extra; a Casey story was used instead.

That would be WODC in Columbus,Ohio. I was referring to "...the rarest of all themes." Not sure what that means.
