As kani alluded to, on the 8/30/75 show Casey played a drop piece of the Beach Boys' original version of "Help Me Ronda" as a lead-in to Johnny Rivers' remake. And it really WAS the original version---it was the album cut from "The Beach Boys Today!" with the spelling that I just posted. It was subsequently re-recorded under the conventional spelling, with the comma added to the title and with a few key changes. The (bad) ukulele opening and solo were ditched and replaced by a cold open and guitar solo, respectively, the second line had the word "I" added to "Come in late at night and in the morning I just lay in bed" and in the second verse "ruin our plans" became "shatter our plans". This version was the one that was released as a single and shot to #1. Johnny Rivers' remake used the original lyrics. My first real crush was named Ronda but she wasn't named after the song.

Behind the scenes at Watermark in September 1973, one-time AT40 guest host Don Bowman was prepping for the October 6, 1973 launch of American Country Countdown. And that marks 2023 as a milestone year for ACC. I’m curious to know if there are plans for a 50-year celebration.

Oddly, the "The Beach Boys Today!" LP version was the one that was on the 1974 #1 BB compilation double album, "Endless Summer". I remember when I bought that album in the summer of '74 and was disappointed that the 'real' version of 'Rhonda' wasn't on it instead of that weird-sounding (to me) version without the 'surf' solo on it. And, per Wiki, that is Glen Campbell playing that solo. He's on both versions, playing 12-string acoustic guitar on the first version and electric guitar on the second. The hit single version was included on the "Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!)" LP, which charted in July '65, two months after the single had hit #1.

Back in the late '60s/early '70s, WOR-AM in NYC used to do their own countdown of the BB Easy Listening Top 40.

In 1973, ads periodically appeared in Billboard's Radio/TV section for Black 40, a soul singles countdown hosted by Don St. John, of Chicago's WGRT-AM.

Tusculum University Pioneer Football on WSMG Radio tonight, so no AT40 at least to start.

I'll go with 9/9/72 over 9/7/74 for next weekend. 9/9/72 last aired in 2014. For the B show, I'll go with 9/10/77.

Territory FM Darwin Australia playing '73. It started at 10:30 a.m. eastern time. That means they will play the show again starting at 7:30 p.m. eastern later today. They have varied the times they play the show on Fridays. Normally if they play the show at 10:30 a.m. eastern they play it again at 7:30 p.m. eastern. They have started the show at other times on Fridays such as 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. eastern time.

Bill Benjamin hasn't posted any lineup for Labor Day specials on WPNC's website. Anyone know of any specials being played this holiday weekend?

Interesting... Looks like maybe Billboard figured they'd get in on the action directly, as opposed to just licensing their chart info to another company. I'm assuming it was not a success?

Listening to 9/1/73 right now on KLFM. Missed the first hour+15min or so yesterday on WSQL. So far it's been great hearing three truly 'lost' R&B/pop hits: "Future Shock", "There It Is", and "Stoned Out Of My Mind". Three more coming up soon, from (the great) Bobby Womack, Don Covay, and Joe Simon. And hearing "The Hurt" is a nice change from Cat's more overplayed hits.
