I don't recall the live version of "Smoke" every charting, though. Ambiguous, as the 45 (which I've owned since that summer of '73) has the live "Made In Japan" version on one side and the studio "Machine Head" version on the other, both edited down from their respective LP versions. Like Pete with WLS, in my area the edited live version was the hit version on local top 40 radio. I heard the studio only on AT40, until I bought the 45.

I always assumed that the “Smoke On the Water” 45 was the studio version, at least on the A side. For airplay, Billboard used radio station playlists, and they presumably just reported the song but could have played either or both versions.

As I mention above, the 45 has both the live and studio versions. I'd imagine that WB Records probably considered the live side as the 'A' side, as the live "Made In Japan' charted just before the single did in '73. The studio version was from the spring 1972 LP "Machine Head", and the band had already released a newer studio album, 'Who Do We think We Are!" at the beginning of '73, just three months before "Made In Japan" charted in April. The 45 charted a month later, in late May.

Prediction for next week's show:9/4/76. Didn't Peteski already strongly hint 9/1/73?

Prediction for next week's show:9/4/76. Didn't Peteski already strongly hint 9/1/73? Not unless you count his mention of “Smoke On the Water” (#40 on 9/1/73) as such. Which is possible, but I didn’t read that into it.

Perhaps 9/1/73 will be the designated A show next week-If that's the case,9/4/76 could be the possible B show.

Of note from September 1, 1973: the A-side of the Carole King hit at #28 was "Believe in Humanity", but Casey that week played the B-side, "You Light Up My Life", which was presumably also getting a fair amount of airplay, and is not to be confused with the Joe Brooks written, Debby Boone sung hit from four years later.

More connecting-the-charts trivia…
After debuting on last week’s Hot 100 dated August 29, 1973, Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett’s “Monster Mash” ranks among the Top 40 on this week’s 9/1/73 countdown.
