Great show!
I have a couple of questions pertaining to "State of the World" by Janet Jackson on your list. Did you assign equal points to its chart positions as you did with the Hot 100 singles? Did you base it on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart?
Were there any other airplay-only hits that made it close to your Top 100 list? Janet's "Go Deep" from 1998 reached #11 on the R&R Pop chart, and I would think that that song would have reached around that position on the Hot 100 Airplay chart.

I used the positioning on the hot 100, even if it was considered an Album Cut.

I don't really have any issues with the tabulation process especially when a great song is #1. I won't divulge it in case people still haven't heard the show. But I will say that the top 3 songs were all from the Soundscan era. Now when Billboard did their top 100 songs of all time in 2008 and made a point to adjust point totals to reflectthe Soundscan era versus the pre-Soundscan era, here is what happened with regard to Jackson family songs. The 3 that ended up in the top 3 of the MERCountdown did not even make the top 100. There were only 2 that did and they were Say Say Say at #35 and Billie Jean at 71. What does all this mean? If you just base a ranking of songs from the last 40-50 years on the Hot 100, Soundscan era songs will end up dominating the top of that chart. If you want to level the playing field, then you have to adjust point totals from different eras as Billboard did. Based on the latter method of tabulation, Say Say Say would be the biggest hit by a Jackson. That said, I like the song that was at #1 in the MERC better so I won't complain

I have to say that I did some handicapping of songs for the countdown. The main thing is weeks on the charts inflating, so I made a point of peak position and weeks at #1 being the main winning points, but still some soundscan stuff got in there. But there was alot in the top 20 that wasn't soundscan!

I'm not going to harp on it. You are a one man show. If Casey Kasem tried to do AT40 as a one man show, things would have been difficult for him too. I just read Newsweek and they have a list of the top 10 summer songs since 1960. They were "ranked by total weeks spent on Billboard's Hot 100". Guess what? 8 of the 10 songs were from the last 20 years. The only pre-Soundscan songs were Endless Love at #8 and Every Breath You Take at 10. So in another couple years, the whole top 10 will be from the Soundscan era.

Thats from a reporter who doesn't know any better. Besides the top summer songs shouldn't be just songs that hit the top 40 during summer, they should be awesome summery sounding songs, no matter when they charted.
