The album version of "Girls Can Get It" is 3:16, so probably it was an edit job.

In 1975 5000 Volts "I'm On Fire" seemed like it was only one minute. Another edit I remember was "Hey Deanie" seemed also maybe a little over one minute. As many of us have been saying AT 40 was way way overdue to go to a four hour format when it finally did in October 1978. Does everyone pretty much agree the extreme editing stopped after the switch to a hour hour show?

i didn't think it would get any shorter than what premiere did to "ebony eyes" on the 1978 year end countdown.....come on, 15 seconds? ?? If anyone has a file of that, please share it.....that would be a total joke. Ok - I just grabbed my copy of Top 100 of 1978 - recorded off XM radio - it was the regular version (uncut and unedited)..... Maybe the version that was heard on the original post was cut by the station broadcasting the show?

I have a vague memory that Premiere once played the Top 100 of 1978 over two weeks, condensing eight hours into only six. That may be the broadcast that butchered several songs (including "Ebony Eyes") to fit 100 songs into six hours.

I remember he faded GIVE IT UP TURN IT LOOSE by Tyrone Davis after the second chorus, making it somewhere like 1:25.

This year the record goes to “Mine” by Bazzi at 2:09. Both Ryan Seacrest and Rick Dees pointed out how short it was, but they had different answers when finding the last top 40 song that was that short.

I remember 1/20/73 had a #40 song called "I'll Be Your Shelter" by Luther Ingram, that was cut very short. It was at #40 again the next week and then dropped off.

Remember when Rick Dees played only 50 seconds of Ludacris' "Roll Out" when it was Rick's Weekly Top 40 countdown?

^That happened quite frequently with rap hits, especially "Boom! Shake The Room" and "Whoomp! (There It Is)," although these were more like song drops.
After awhile in 1994, "The Sign" would begin with the opening beats and then conclude with the final words in the song, "I saw the sign." Probably not more than 5 seconds.

Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance" clocked in at 2:53 when it was on AT40 in the fall of 1983. Unedited.
However, Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" from 1985 beat out "Safety Dance" and Springsteen's song is about 2:42 long. And again, this is unedited we're talking about.

"The Sign" is certainly not a controversial song with 'objectionable' lyrics. Wasn't listening after '88, so it's an honest question.

He started that practice in the early 90s when some top 40 stations weren’t playing rap so I assume he was skipping over them to not offend his affiliates.

I always thought the shortest song on AT40 was Stay by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs (a #1 hit from 1960 that clocks in at about 90 seconds). Obviously, this thread is all about songs that were edited down to some ridiculous short time. Ohhh...
