Here are your clues: *4 hour top 50 show * Innovative * Legendary * Music will range in a span of 32 years, but WHICH 32 years? I think that it may be the total of: 1) from July 4, 1970 through August 6, 1988 (Casey's original run of AT40); 2) from January 21, 1989 through March 7, 1998 (Casey's Top 40); and 3) from March 28, 1998 through January 4, 2004 (Casey's second run of AT40). So, it may be the All-Time Top 50 Songs of Casey Kasem's American Top 40 and Casey's Top 40 shows...

Thats a bit more than 32 years, good guess but no...
Dukedeb PM'ed me and guessed Queen... They are not going to be heard on the show but in theory, they have something to do with the show in a way....

Is it from August 4, 1958 through November 23, 1991, i.e. Billboard Hot 100 Charts before the SoundScan era? Oh, again, it is for 33 years

Another clue: There is a very diverse blend of styles but we'll only hear one artist/band

Another good clue... This artist/band has made at least one appearance on The Simpsons.

I'd guess Paul McCartney (whose Beatles hits span 1964-1996), but not sure what connection he would have with Queen...

The only connection I can think of (Other than ridiculous 5 degees ones) was that Queen played on the benefit he orgainzed for Kampuchea (in 1979)
I see where you get that guess from, and its a great one... but its incorrect.

The best guess I can come up with is Eric Clapton. His Cream work probably first hit around 1966, and I think his last big solo hit was 1998. Certainly legendary, and played different styles (rock, blues, even reggae with "I Shot the Sheriff").

That is also a good guess, but no.
Here is a new clue. In order to figure out the surprise countdown, I had to look at Artists who appeared on both of the other two special countdowns.

Here is a new clue: Artists who contributed to the countdown's theme are as diverse as Queen, Usher, James Brown, and Taylor Swift.

So if it involves one artist, but other artists contribute to the theme, does it involve those other artists covering the songs of the main artist? Perhaps something like the top Beatles songs done by other artists (since mstgator mentioned that Beatles songs fit the timeframe)? Or is it the top cover songs done by a single act? I hope you're not doing the top 50 songs by the Glee cast.

That is a good idea and that may just be a future project. But no...
Another clue: The artist on the countdown never hit #1, but of the 50 songs we'll hear, 27 of them went to #1.
