There were no slow songs in the Top 10 from late July through mid August of 1979 - 3 weeks in a row.
Was this the only time such a thing happened for such a long time? Does anyone know or have a guess?

In recent years, it surely must've happened a lot more. Those ballads are becoming a rare breed on the radio these days...

These days pop charts look like dance charts, when everybody sounds like Guetta and all the acts do the same easy dance sound, from Britney to Kesha, from Uhser to Chris Brown. Boring.

Does anyone know or have a guess? Funny that you would mention this now because on SXM is the show from 7/15/72 and as I indicated on the AT40 firsts thread, that is the first time that the entire top 10 is AC songs. Now AC is not just slow songs. So this is not the opposite of what you asked for but it is quite a change from this week in 1972 to this week in 1979. As to your question, the first week in the 70s that there were no slow songs in the top 10 would be 11/29/75 as the disco era was just getting into overdrive.

Probably because those whose careers thrived on Disco had rushed to get their latest disco hits out before the decline. Take a look at the rest of the top 40 and you'll see much less disco in a proportional sense.
