I was just listening to last week's AT40 from 07-08-72 and comparing it to the cue sheet for that week. On the actually sheet it shows Carole King's It's Too Late to be played after Michael Jackson at #18, but on the show it was played after Donny Osmond at #14. Which one do you think is the correct location?

The correct location on the original show was where it shows on the cue sheet. Premiere cut it out after #18 and offered it as an optional extra between the 2nd and 3rd hours. Of course me being anal like I am had to put it back after #18 when I edited the show so it would sound more like the original airing.

How many shows like that? When I edited the show, I didn't know about that. I'm now thinking whether I should put it back after #18.

For those of you that are new to this, that is a standard practice by Premiere. They will edit out an extra, a LDD, an archive song, etc. and make it an optional extra. Using this last show as an example, what that does is eliminate them from editing any songs in the hour that "It's Too Late" was an optional extra. In other words, they have to edit some time out of each hour. By taking ITL out entirely, that meant they edited out that 3 minutes (+/-) instead of having to edit 1 or 2 other songs in that hour.

Is it a standard practice for the 70s show only? Since I started listening to the 80s show earlier this year, I didn't notice any 80s show that has an AT40 extra, a LDD, or an AT40 archive edited out and made it an optional extra.

It is more common on the 70s shows. I don't want to say that it has not happened on the 80s shows but if it has, it is rarely done.

It's definitely a more regular practice in the 70's shows and quite honestly, I have been listening to the 80's shows since last summer and don't think it's happened once on an 80's show during that time. It's not a bad idea for them to do it for the 70's shows, because as dukedeb said, it alleviates Premiere from having to edit down songs to make their allotted time slots.
