I have always loved novelty songs. Alot happened before AT40 came along.
Here are my faves from while it was going on:
From the 70's:
Funky Worm by Ohio Players (Used by tons of rap artists as a sample over the years)
In The Mood: Henhouse Five Plus Too (Ray Stevens at his most bizarre!)
From The 80's:
Pac Man Fever by Buckner & Garcia (Gotta love Pac Man!)
How about everyone else? I am curious, you can even complain about the ones you HATED!

On the recording I made of the most recent '72 show I kept wanting to hear Jimmy Castor's "Troglodyte" over and over. ("I'll sock it to ya daddy"!) But for the whole of the 70's, "Shaving Cream" has to be the topper; not only because it was funny but because of the way it resurfaced nearly three decades after it was made!
Much slimmer pickings in the '80s but Weird Al's "Eat It" and SCTV's "Take Off" are the first that come to mind. Oh yeah...guilty pleasure; "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry. ("Ta-ta-ta Trigger...of course")

OK...just to clear it up, "Take Off" was by Bob & Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas from the television series SCTV.)

Back in 74, I bought the 45 rpm of "The Streak" - Ray Stevens. Still own it and like the song. Always thought the record was rushed to market, since the label on the single was just a plain white background for Barnaby Records.

Take Off (1982) Valley Girl (1982) Rubber Duckie (1970) Mr. Jaws (1975) The Streak (1974) Monster Mash (1973 re-issue)
I could list more, but I thought I'd give someone else a chance to list some of their favorites.

Anything Ray Stevens is good! I have always been partial to Gitarzan (60's though)
In the late 80's, he had an album called Crackin Up with 2 really good ones: The Ballad Of Cactus Pete & Lefty and Gourmet Restaurant.

Dickie Goodman had some great ones that started in 1956 with The Flying Saucer and ended in 1975 with Mr. Jaws. He had 5 top 40 hits during that period. One hit wonder,(Artists that hit the top 40 once) Meri Wilson had a number 18 smash with Telephone Man in 1977. She had a follow-up with Peter The Meter Reader which did not reach the top 40. Meri later died in a car accident in 2002.

I would say my favorite novelty record on "AT40" was "Shaving Cream" by Benny Bell-The only station in the NYC area that played it was WNBC-At the time, they were running "The Dr.Demento Show"-As noted elsewhere on this board,Dr.D found this record in a thrift shop in downtown Los Angeles & the rest as they say,is history.

Why was Monster Mash re-released? That always confused me. It wasn't in a movie was it? Or was Dr Demento at fault for that one too?

For me, the greatest novelty record to make AT40, without a doubt, has to be "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot. Because it peaked during pop radio's anti-rap period, the listening audience missed a great classic!
But for AT40's classic period, it's a toss up between Reunion's "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me), and C W McCall's "Convoy." Both these songs got some melody and are still funny long after their chart runs.

Does "The Bad Touch" by The Bloodhound Gang count as novelty?

Yes, it does. Much more so than Missy Elliott's "One Minute Man", as some poster suggested in another thread.

Hey, Joel Whitburn says that My Name Is by Eminem is a novelty song, but NONE of his other VERY SIMILAR songs are not....

My favorite AT40 novelty song is Bertha Butt Boogie by the Jimmy Casator Bunch. I also like most Ray Stevens songs, but my favorite by him was Shriner's Convention, which didn't make the pop charts but was a top 10 country hit in 1980.

Bertha Butt Boogie is great but every time I see a girl with a huge behind, that song plays in my mind....
