Hi Guys & Gals,
Just did another quick A/B/C comparison of AT40 streams recorded as .wav files and compared in Apple Logic. Although WNNS is listed as having a high-quality stream, I find it the least "punchy" of the three. I would not consider using it for any further AT40 recordings. The best of the three is JACK FM (WQSR). Nice and punchy. However previously I A/Bd it with WRIP and RIP took the edge by just a bit.
My new strategy being to record as many 70s shows terrestrially from KKLZ, that means no WRIP (on at same time), so I'm trying some other sources. Thus I would currently consider JACK FM (WQSR) my number one choice. However as many people know, they have this nasty tendency to drop the stream, so you have to babysit it. This week I missed #33,32 and the optional extra.
So this weekend coming up again being one where I want both shows, I'll do WFMX at 10PM PDT, do KKLZ for the 70s show at 7AM PDT, and then do JACK FM (WQSR) at 5PM PDT. If Jack drops out, I'll have WFMX as the backup which sounds almost as good. Both WFMX and JACK FM (WQSR) play the optional extras, so good to go there.
Hope that helps! Another weekend of the "AT40 Shuffle" comin' up. LOVE IT!

There's a channel, KEDG I think it is that airs AT40: The 70's and 80's back to back on Sunday late morning into the afternoon. I am able to end that feed and start the recording of the 80's show on WQSR in plenty of time. You may want to give that a try. Quality isn't WQSR level, but I consider it good. Plus, it uses Windows Media Player so no real worries about website feeds stopping for whatever reason.

analog - you and I must have had the same dropout on WQSR, as those were exactly the same songs that I missed (#33 - #31 plus the U2 extra). More often than not I make it through the WQSR shows without a drop, but if I get one, they almost always happen around 45 minutes into the first hour, give or take. Other than on one show, I don't know that I have ever had any dropouts during hours 2-4.
WNNS has pretty solid and clear audio, but I agree--they seem to have the graphics turned down lower than most - almost as if they turn off the "bass boost" or something. They are definitely my backup and not my first choice--but I think they are solid for a backup.
My other favorite - if they don't play extra ads and botch the beginning of the show or cut in late from the commercial breaks - is WMMX. They are practically interchangeable with WQSR in terms of audio. Only problem is their show starts so early (5 a.m. here in the Central Time Zone) that I have to set the timer and hope the stream doesn't cut out over night, which it does about half the time (or I can get up right before 5 to check on it, but that is not really too desirable on a Saturday).
I am intrigued by WFMX, since a number of people seem to mention them lately. Will maybe try them this weekend?

Also--I don't know what kind of luck everyone has had with KKLZ. I tried them for the 4/10/76 show a couple months back and they did that deal where they tacked an extra ad onto the end of every commercial break and cut in late. Haven't used them since...

The Clearchannel feeds are the best, KQQL out of Mpls ( I can also record over air with my Sony Walkman ) for Premiere 70's show (Sat 7AM CST) is great. Good gaps, easy to edit. After trying all the 80's stations, WQSR is the best. Always solid, seldom starts too early. As far as listening, I enjoy Magic 96.5 from Birmingham Sunday morning. A good back-up.
I find that resetting my modem and router before any recording has helped avoid dropouts and feed drops. The XM shows are so spotty, so perfect and some drop a 1/4 second every 2-3 minutes.

One thing I would give $100 to know for fun... How many people log on WQSR at 8pm EST and fall off after the show is over? How many of us are out there? Could we have a convention? The freaking Trekkies have done it for years!
Something I have also always wanted to know about XM, number of people playing a station at any given time. It would be so great to see current listeners as a bad song comes on.

Both WFKL and KEGK are excellent, too if you have Jetcast player and the plugin for your browser installed.

I concur "kchkwong" WFKL is my numero uno!!
BTW "atfanmpls" it would also be interesting to find out how many people log on to AT40 from outside the US.

Does anybody have any opinion about KZOY? Also which of the 70s stations do people like?

So I cannot connect to some stations due to their license. Unfortunately WQSR is one of them. So, my prefer stations are WFKL and WFMX. I use other stations with lower sound quality as backups.

I also use WQSR for the 80's. For a strong 70's stream, I use CKDK-FM out of Ontario - Sunday mornings at 6AM Pacific Time. Also KJR-FM from Seattle is a good 70's choice at 8AM Pacific Time Sunday.

Does anybody have any opinion about KZOY? Also which of the 70s stations do people like? My current favorite is WJGH out of Jacksonville on Sunday mornings. Solid audio, they do the commercial breaks, etc. well (except the 5/19/79 show--don't know if a '79 show threw them off?) and they play all three extras every week. My other favorites are KLOU and KJR - both have very good audio and do a great job with the shows. As for the extras however, KLOU only plays the last extra before the final segment, and KJR doesn't play any extras. A few other good ones that I have tried are KQQL, KLTH, and WORC. Those are all Sunday shows (except KQQL)--still looking for other good Saturday shows. And of course, if all else fails or if you can't record over the weekend, WBBG's Tuesday night show is solid too.

My preferred streaming stations have been WINC (till we lost them ), CKRU, and WQSR. CKRU does play with the volume down compared to other stations, but they're generally reliable. My only knock against WQSR is their general inability to keep a stream for an entire four-hour duration; you generally have to refresh at least once. I have been able to record off KEGK, WMXY, and KKLI as well. KEGK's stream can be a little touchy if you're active on your computer during the show; if all you're doing is listening to the show you should be golden. Of course, since their timeslot change they are now known to cut off the show early... WMXY's stream quality is quite lesser than others...but they do have that Monday night option (which is what I used to record ). KKLI is not recommended for those who detest the "stereo" sound...I know there's a few of you out there. I generally never bothered to listen via WNNS. I don't think there was any particular reason...I just never have yet. I shyed away from WFMX because they're not consistent with the extras in the Saturday morning timeslot, and I generally can't stay up to make it through the whole overnight timeslot.
