MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2011 E Street sideman Clarence "Big Man" Clemons has a stroke at his home in Florida
The longtime Bruce Springsteen E Street Band star saxophone player has reportedly undergone two brain surgeries in Florida, and had shown paralysis on his left side. The Backstreets.com site is saying that "Yesterday, it did not look good at all. Today...miracles are happening. His vital signs are improving....He was paralyzed on his left side, but now he's squeezing with his left hand." Clemons previously had a knee replacement and spinal surgeries, but told Rolling Stone magazine in February that "as long as my mouth, hands and brain still work, I'll be out there" touring with Springsteen. Clemons recently played on a track for Lady Gaga, and the New Jersey Star-Ledger says she tweeted this morning that "My very close friend + musician on The Edge of Glory, Clarence Clemons, is very sick. Can we all make some get well videos?"

He was 69. Clemons had played sax in Springsteen's E Street Band off and on since 1972. He passed away at a hospital in Palm Beach, Florida, the spokesperson said. The cause was complications from his stroke of last Sunday, June 12th. Bruce Springsteen said of Clarence: Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage. His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years. He was my great friend, my partner, and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band. Stopped in front of the Stone Pony yesterday in Asbury Park and paid my last respects to "The Big Man". Outside there are pictures, flowers and candles burning and the sound of the ocean from across the street.
