Andrew Gold has died after apparently suffering a heart attack. While his biggest AT40 hit was 1977's "Lonely Boy" which got to #7, his second biggest hit will live forever thanks to "Golden Girls" reruns. "Thank You For Being A Friend" only got as high as #25 in 1978, but as the theme song to the NBC show, it continues to be heard every day.
Prior to his solo career he spent several years in Linda Ronstadt's band. He apparently played the memorable guitar solo on "You're No Good." He also produced Karla Bonoff's #19 hit in 1982 "Personally". He almost had a 3rd top 40 hit in 1983 when he teamed with Graham Gouldman (previously of 10cc). As the group Wax, they hit #43 with a great song "Right Between The Eyes".
I especially loved his last Hot 100 solo single "Never Let Her Slip Away". That this phenomenal song only peaked at 67 is a tragedy.
As sad as it is when a hitmaker from our past passes away, it's comforting to know that we'll always be able to enjoy their work as an enduring legacy.

!!!!!! So so sorry to see him go, not to mention shocked. His version of "Thank You For Being A Friend" has a prominent place on my iPod playlist. Thank you, too, Andrew. You will be missed, but your fine music will live on.

I liked his song "Lonely Boy" so much I bought his album "What's Wrong With This Picture?"
I really liked the album cover. It was a challenge to find the number of items that were wrong with the picture (such as a closed window, yet the curtains were blowing).
The only disappointment was after opening the album, no solution inside was given to how many things were wrong with the picture.
Finally in 1978, I did buy the single of "Never Let Her Slip Away". Too bad that great song didn't make the Top 40.

I didn't know this until day but he also did another theme song to another long running NBC sitcom. The theme from Mad About You called "Final Frontier" was also sung Andrew Gold.

Last week, my buddy Ron "Boogiemonster" Gerber of Crap From The Past did a tribute to Andrew Gold & also a tribute to Martin Rushent, who was the producer of Human League's "Dare" album. Here is the show in case anyone wants to listen to it: www.archive.org/details/cftp-2011-06-10

I have an alternate show to my countdown show. A music show where I play alot of different things and give info on them. I did a nice tribute to him right after he died and played 4 of his songs. Lonely Boy, Thank You For Being A Friend, Never Let Her Slip Away and Building A Bridge To Your Heart by Wax.
