I was curious if anyone knows what the average length of time it took to record American Top 40 each week was. I know in the early days when it was done in real time it took double digit hours, but what about when they went to voice tracking. About how long did it take then? Does anyone know?

18 hours to be exact for the first ever AT40.

I think the way they did it was cheating. I had always thought Casey just recorded the show beginning to end and if a mistake or fumble happened, they had him stop and start again and just edit out the mistake later. Thats how I do my 60's countdown show.

By the time they had the voicetracking down, it probably took no more than a few hours for Casey to say his parts, as he often was able to record several radio and/or TV shows in a day. However, recording time likely varied a lot, as Casey would record segments over and over, even when there was no obvious mistake, to get the mood and delivery just as he wanted it. If he was feeling especially picky or perfectionistic that week, it may have taken most of the day.
