I don't mind hearing the edits. Its a nice change as many of them are not in print on cd.
I was angrier when they'd edit down songs for space (on 11-15-75, Miracles by Jefferson Starship doesn't even make 2 minutes) But in the same shows, he had time for extra songs and LDD which is ridiculous!

I was pretty on top of songs in the 80s, so there isn't anything I discovered by (re)listening to the shows. But there are a few that I rediscovered. I can't think of any off the top of my head, however.

AT40 really opened my ears to great music and here's just a few Don't you let my heart know that you're leaving - Gene Cotton Title is actually "Before My Heart Finds Out". Great song. I will age myself by saying I already knew all of the songs before these AT40 shows aired. Partially because I was around in the early 70's (although a child) and also because I collected music in the 70's and 80's, making a point to obtain every song that hit Billboard's Top 40. I have many used record stores to thank for that. Thanks for the correction!!

I listened to virtually every AT40 from October 1977 to April 1987. So I know basically every song in the top 40 during that time. Before and after that I run into some songs that I do not know when listening to an AT40 i.e. all the shows from last weekend. By the way, last week's 1988 show was the first time I had ever heard an AT40 from that year.

I have many of the Joel Whitburn Top 40 Hits books and always wondered about D.O.A. Pretty good song but very disturbing! Another one I like is Sad Sweet Dreamer by Sweet Sensation. Thanks to AT 40 The 70's, I get to hear a lot of songs that before now I could only read the song title in a book.

Back on April 14, 1973, a very curiously-named "song" debuted in the Hot 100 at number 76. Like all new chart records, I watched it slowly climb until it hit the Top 40. With the names of two well-recognized movie and song fictional characters, I continued to wonder what it sounded like. Unfortunately at the time, there wasn't an AT40 station anywhere near me. Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the title -- "Superfly Meets Shaft" by John & Ernest. It wasn't until I obtained a copy of an AT40 show from May 1973 years later that I was able to hear this for the first time. And then I realized why it didn't receive airplay on many radio stations -- it resembled a high school production from a couple of Dickie Goodman wannabes. It's one of those that's worthy of being in the spotlight, but not for too long. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3suV1Ue52r4

I'm surprised it made the top 40, to be honest.

Sugar Free by Wawanee. That was a song I could not get it out of my head the time I heard it on AT40 and I think it was only in the chart for 1 week...

Pete and pizzzza, your comments about Superfly Meets Shaft are interesting. First thanks Pete for putting the link to the song in your post. I like you and pizzzza did not hear the song at the time or since. So I just heard it for the first time. But Pete you said it was like a high school production by a couple of Dickie Goodman wannabes. Well it happens to be produced by Dickie Goodman. I am not surprised that it hit the top 40 since Goodman himself had a couple of such tunes make the 40. And speaking of which, after hearing that song, I saw links to Goodman's own songs and heard Watergrate which just missed the top 40. 2 things about that are noteworthy. One it uses I Knew Jesus by Glen Campbell which itself missed the 40. I don't know of any other non top 40 songs that Goodman used in his top 40 or near top 40 hits. Secondly, one of the lines is "What will you be saying Mr. President in 1976 at election time". And he plays "It's been 3 long years, do you still want me". The president at the time was Nixon and he could not have run for another term because he would have served 2 terms by then. Did not happen of course but a mistake nonetheless!

I've discovered another song from the 70's from these old AT40 shows that escaped me during its original chart run. (And I see why - WABC in NYC only played it for 2 weeks!)
It's "Emma" by Hot Chocolate. Love that song now!

I enjoyed your observation about overlooking the two-term rule for presidents. Though an obvious error, it's unfortunate that the recording failed to reach AT40. The Jerry Lee Lewis song should've made the Top 40 too.
