• Country: "Somewhere Tonight" – Highway 101. (Only week at No. 1; fronted by female vocalist Paulette Carlson, the group went on to have three more through the rest of the 1980s and seven top 10 hits into early 1991.) • Soul: "System of Survival" – Earth, Wind and Fire. (Only week at No. 1, their eighth and final No. 1 R&B hit, and first since "Let's Groove" from November 1981-January 1982.) • Album: soundtrack to "Dirty Dancing." Fifth week at No. 1, of an eventual nine. Three new songs that were monster hit singles in late 1987-early 1988 ("I Had the Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes; "She's Like the Wind" by Patrick Swayze f. Jennifer Grey; and "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen). • Dance: "Pump Up the Volume" – MARRS. A one-hit wonder from late 1987-early 1988.
