Countdown U.S.A. with Dave Sholin lasted until 1990. I believe April 21. I don’t have shows or cue sheet to confirm this. I do know this; Dave Sholin’s Insider debuted 4-28-90. It was a four hour show similar to Countdown U.S.A. with longer segments and comedy bits (‘the joke of the week”) that used the Gavin chart. I’m not sure of the end date. The last show I have from this series is 7-21-90 (show #13). The end date of "Dave Sholin's Insider" was September 28, 1990. There were a few hints of that being the last show (i.e. no new "Inside Rumor of the Week" and at the end, Sholin thanking everyone for listening for the past 75 weeks).

I can add some information here. Dan Ingram's Satellite Survey debuted on April 21, 1984 with a chart based on listener requests. At least that's what I have in my notes for this show. Also, I have a promo copy of Top 30 USA, a countdown hosted by MG Kelley. The program's chart came from Radio & Records and was written by a former AT40 staff member, Scott Paton. As for the actual chart used for the demo program, I'm not sure other than it's Spring 1983. Dan Fogelberg's "Make Love Stay" was #30 and Lionel Richie's "My Love" was #1. Perhaps someone can nail down a date with that information. There's only one 1983 chart with "Make Love Stay" at #30, and that's the chart for February 18, which would have been used the weekend of February 26. At first, I thought that the Lionel Richie song you were thinking of was "You Are", since that was the song he had out around that time, but it wasn't at #1 - it was #3 that week. The song did hit #1 two weeks later, but by that time, "Make Love Stay" was in the Top 20. The week that "You Are" was on top, the #30 song was "Whirly Girl" by Oxo.

This is one of the first comprehensive posts I've seen about John Leader's Countdown America, and also my first post on this board. So, hello to all and Happy Holidays.
John's show was carried in (my city) Atlanta on Z93/WZGC, which was kinda funny to me since John worked here at 94Q/WQXI in the 1970s.
I was fortunate enough to communicate with John Leader a couple of years ago, right after I purchased a Countdown America show on eBay. He said that he was an infamous saver of everything, including two copies of every "CA" show he did. Then, in 1994, the Northridge earthquake came and destroyed John's house and all of his archives.
The show I have is 06/04/1983. I am looking for the 06/11/1983 show that spotlighted Styx. If anyone has that show and would like to trade, please let me know. Private emails are welcome.

As I bump this, you mean September 28, 1991. Just a few months after is switched from Top 40 to Top 30.

I will to this day never understand why I switched from listening to AT40 in 1983 to CA in 1984. Maybe I wanted to only dedicate 3 hours to listening at the time (not knowing that CA would expand to 4 hours in 1984). Maybe I wanted to listen to a more local station (CA aired on WKPE on Cape Cod as opposed to AT40 airing on WROR Boston, which sometimes I'd have spotty reception from). I'd switch back to listening to AT40 before the year ended and never looked back. 😁
