It may have taken many years for the Led Zeppelin classic to reach the little piece of vinyl... not that they didn't try it with at least one other song back in the day ("Whole Lotta Love" is the one I remember)... but it finally is, and a guy some of us here might know plays it on the 'toob: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdNcD3T5xD0

I had heard that Atlantic Records was planning to release "Stairway To Heaven" as a single in 1971-However,it clocks in at almost eight minutes-Therefore,a decision was made to release an edited version-However,that didn't sit well with the members of Led Zeppelin & it was never done. In 1986,a band called Far Corporation made the Billboard "Hot 100" with their rendition of "Stairway To Heaven"-Barry Scott recently played it on his "Lost 45's" show-It's quite good.

Though never a pop singles-oriented band, Led Zeppelin did make AT40 with five other singles: "Immigrant Song", "Black Dog", "D'yer Mak'er", "Trampled Under Foot", and "Fool In the Rain". ("Whole Lotta Love" was about five or six months too early to be counted down by Casey.)
As for "Stairway to Heaven", I think the band made the right call; the song progresses so majestically and naturally that editing it would have cut down much of its power. So it had to settle for being one of the most requested and played album rock cuts of all time.

I believe mrjukebox has previously noted his enjoyment of the Dr. Demento program. (I've always enjoyed it too!) So mrjukebox may be able to clarify some information here. OK, mrjukebox, please answer this question. What does "Stairway To Heaven" have to do with the theme from "Gilligan's Island"?

Hi,Pete-To answer your question,"Stairway To Gilligan's Island" was recorded in 1978 by a group called Little Roger & The Goosebumps-It received a massive amount of airplay on Dr.Demento's show-It's basically a "mash up" of the theme song from "Gilligan's Island" coupled with "Stairway To Heaven"-I believe Dr.Demento said the band was subsequently sued by Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement-I'm not sure if Sherwood Schwartz, who created "Gilligan's Island" & co-wrote the theme song, had any comment. It's a great tune-I know Dr.Demento played it as a tribute to Bob Denver when he passed away a few years ago.
