I noticed something unusual in the structure of the 4/14/84 show this week. Anybody else pick up on this?
The show starts with last week's #1 song, then a commercial break before #40. That by itself is odd.
Then, before #39, Casey tells a story about having 4 songs from one soundtrack in the countdown at once. Two of the songs were debuts, and he mentions them both even though he hasn't played the second one yet. Again, not common for Casey to do.
Then, after the second break, he plays that second debut at #38. Which left me wondering...
Why didn't they just play last week's #1 and #40 together (as was common practice), then tease that coming up were back to back debuts from the same soundtrack? Wouldn't that have been more interesting, not to mention keeping with the usual structure of the show?

I most certainly noticed that. I thought it was very strange to mention a song that had not yet ever been played on AT40. I figured the same as you, that it would've flowed better breaking at #40 and teasing the back-to-back debuts.
He also mentioned last weeks position number on a couple of the debuts which is not that common.

He also mentioned last weeks position number on a couple of the debuts which is not that common. Yes, that was absolutely unusual! In 1984 alone, I have noticed this a couple of times. For instance when "Adult Education" crashed in at #31 on AT40, he said that it debuted at #43 (if my memory serves me right).

Another odd thing that Casey would often say: When reading the list of last week's droppers, he would often say "for those of you keeping track". Well, it seems to me that if you were keeping track, you wouldn't need him to read the droppers! Am I right? He should actually say "for those of you NOT keeping track."
