Any word if whoever owns the rights to AT40 will sell shows as albums? Sure, we can record them, but it's not the same. That would be great. You know I would load up on 1979 shows since they are rarely played.

I know that it's been mentioned somewhere on here that the original shows were not supposed to be for sale once they aired originally - that they were to be 'disposed' of. But as we all know, that wasn't done. I do know that you can find many AT40 shows on Ebay - the older shows are on albums - the more current on CD.

I don't see the shows ever being sold directly by the rights holder-Premiere because they probably feel as if they can broadcast them and obtain more revenue through advertising than through direct sales. They do allow Shannon/Charismusicgroup (which restores LP shows for their broadcast) to sell shows through his website and on Ebay, however, and that's the closest they will probably ever be to selling shows directly.

Isn't there a statute of limitation on the shows? I know there is in music in general. After 30 years, its considered in the 'public domain', so that would tend to mean shows from the 70s should be free an clear?!? Maybe wishful thinking. I do know that the 70s show seem to sell frequently on ebay, whereas the 80s shows are usually removed after being listed (unless it was posted by charismusicgroup).
In summary though, you should be able to pick up many '79 shows from ebay without worries.

I've also seen several 1990s shows put up on Ebay, both of Shadoe's AT40 and Casey's Top 40; the most recent one I recall seeing was a CT40 from 1996. In light of what was posted here about rights, though, now I wonder if those are in fact fully legit to purchase.

The Shadoe shows yes, Casey shows, no (unless posted by charismusicgroup). Allthough technically I guess the Shadoe shows would be 'illegal' but Premiere doesnt seem to give a rats ass about those.

I don't think 1979 can be played at all--AT40s the 70s, is a 3 hour format and effective October 1978 AT40 went to 4 hours, and of course, AT40 the 80s is a 4 hour format and 1979 is not considered to be in the 80s--talk about being left out, huh? There is also really good music in the mid to late part of 1978 (since the conversion to a 4 hour format) that is excluded as well. Just think, you'll never get to hear LeFreak by Chic since it charted Fall 1978 to Winter 1979!

In summary though, you should be able to pick up many '79 shows from ebay without worries. I would assume that the 30 year rule would be applicable to show availability. But would the fact that some of those shows are being rebroadcast give them more time to restrict before releasing them to public domain? Ebay acts rather strange as far as what shows are sold there. I've known of times when they don't seem to care at all what shows are sold but other times they block shows immediately. I guess it depends upon reactions from Clear Channel at a given time. Personally, I don't know why the two make such a fuss over the selling of those shows. I've always felt that Clear Channel should be happy that Casey shows have such appeal and they should find some way to reach out to these fans and build support.
