One of the greatest voices in the history of NYC radio has been silenced:On Monday night,Ron Lundy passed away at the age of 75-Cause of death was a massive heart attack-Lundy's booming voice was a staple of NY radio for 30+ years-Lundy's broadcasting career began as a record librarian for station WHHM in Memphis,TN.
Following stopovers in Mississippi & Louisiana,Lundy headed straight for WIL in St.Louis where he was known as the "Wil'Child"-It was while working at WIL that he met a fellow air personality named Dan Ingram who ended up being one of his closest friends.
By 1965,Dan Ingram was working at WABC in NYC,which was one of the most popular top forty stations in the country-It seems that there was a vacancy for the all night shift-Ingram went straight to his boss, who was program director Rick Sklar & convinced him that Lundy would be a great fit for that time period.
Lundy then flew out to New York & was interviewed by Sklar.
He was hired on the spot.
After a year doing the overnight show,Lundy was moved to middays,a spot he held for 16 years-On May 10th 1982,WABC switched to an all-talk format-Three hours before the switch took place,Ingram & Lundy did one last music program.
In February 1984,Lundy was hired to work at WCBS-FM,which was "New York's Oldies Station"-Lundy worked from 9AM-noon six days a week-In September 1997,Lundy was 63-He decided it was time to retire-On September 18th,1997,Lundy did his final show on WCBS-FM.
Lundy received visits from former radio colleagues like Chuck Leonard of WABC & Dan Ingram who was doing weekends on CBS-FM-Lundy spent the remainder of his life on a farm in the small town of Bruce,MS-Even though Ron Lundy has passed on,he certainly left his fans with a lot of fun & memories.
