In the meantime, Rick's playing the original "Breathe", which only has Blu Cantrell. Did he ever switch to the version featuring Sean Paul or no? (This, of course, is complicated by the song popping in and out of the countdown...)

The Chris Rock interview where he made the comment about Will Smith and all of his money was pretty timely.

My local station played the Sean Paul version, so the only time I heard the original was during AT40 Not surprising I suppose, though I could only guess at that one (I've only heard two AT40s that have the song). I actually think my own station only played the original, as well - but they also didn't play it very much. Instead, I heard the song more often with the video for the Sean Paul version being on MTV Hits - 2003 was when I first found that channel when going through all the cable channels we had here at home (just because). Oddly enough, I later bought the CD single, one of two I bought that year (the other being "Don't Wanna Try").

KDGL is playing 03/29/86 today. This is the 8th airing of this show in retroDees with the most recent being 04/03/2021. The sure shot would be "Is It Love" by Mr. Mister.

Both dated April 10, it's 1999 and 2004. Notes on 1999 (this will be updated as we go): The bottom of the countdown has the most noticeable fudging, as he drops "Take Me There" an extra notch and instead puts "Harmless" at #39. It's also Mulberry Lane's second week in the countdown, when in the corresponding R&R they'd yet to reach the Top 40 - they're #45 on the matching week. Why pull from that far down? Because here's #44 through 41, in order: - #44 - "These Are the Times", which drops out
- #43 - "Touch It", which has been gone for a month now, but put the brakes on rapidly after plummeting 28-40 in a single week in R&R (though this is her last week there, as she goes recurrent next week)
- #42 - "Doo Wop (That Thing)", which has been gone about as long as Monifah, but like her, was taking its sweet time leaving the R&R chart
- #41 - "We Like to Party!", which was pushed out of R&R's top 40 this week, but it looks like Rick had been holding it out of the countdown, as it did not debut last week when it would have been otherwise supposed to
I will also note: Both Monifah and Lauryn Hill were actually still in Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 that was dated April 3 (the comparable chart for the R&R week) - they'd both make it to 26 weeks and go recurrent off their chart. Monifah had just one more week to go, while Lauryn Hill had six more to go! (I believe that may be a record for their chart for the lowest-peaking song to make it to recurrent there, as just like in R&R, she peaked at #29.) Other chart fudging: Switching Madonna and Better Than Ezra at #23/22. Rick played a different mix of "I Drive Myself Crazy", I will check which one it is after the show. He also played the dance remix of "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" - AT40 only stuck to the original, didn't they? (I've heard three shows from the song's run, none of which had it.) He played the pop mix of "That Don't Impress Me Much", also known as the Dance Mix or International Remix #1 for those who look it up. To be clear, it's this one: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLeayel_OQUAT40 would start out with what is now known as International Remix #2, which is a hybrid of the original and dance mix: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFJPWpE1wQs They'd then switch to Remix #1, and then switch back to Remix #2 again. No surprise he skipped "My Name Is", willing to bet he never actually played it. (I don't think he ever actually played "Forgot About Dre" the following year either, but "The Real Slim Shady" would go too high on R&R for him to ignore, and of course CHR would soon after skew too urban for him to stay skewing against it.) Rick took a look at the biggest name-droppers in music, and played a few droppieces in the process - one of those was "You Get What You Give", which like Dru Hill, dropped out of the countdown this week. I HATE Countdown Challenges that feature Peter & The Polkameisters, because I can almost never figure them out. "Nothing Really Matters" didn't really have a proper intro. It did also have a remix played, however (again, will have to check this after the show). Also not getting an intro was "Have You Ever?". He played the single version of "(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You", which does not have the distinctive handclaps that the album version does. I don't recall AT40 playing this mix during its run, but they did for occasions afterward. As seems to be typical, Rick pulled his #1s in other musical arenas basically at random - the Country #1 "Meanwhile" did not actually top a U.S. country chart, nor did the Dance #1 "Stranded" top the dance chart. "Mas Tequila" did actually top the (heritage) Rock chart - but not until May. While I was checking that, I was distracted and didn't fully catch the start of the next segment - was Rick playing snippets of "animal" songs to set up "The Animal Song"? In any event, what caught my attention was when one of the snippets was from Anne Murray's "Snowbird" - turns out that's in my family's record collection. Not being a big listener of 70s AT40, I wasn't familiar with its having a countdown run very early on, and admittedly had never actually committed the name of the song to memory. (That is to say, the tune was recognizable, the name was not.) But yes, that's a song I can recall hearing multiple times growing up, almost any time we broke out the collection and played a batch.

Rick played a different mix of "I Drive Myself Crazy", I will check which one it is after the show. It's Riprock and Alex G's Smooth Haze Remix. I distinctly remember hearing this one before, which would have had to have been from late in its run, as it wasn't until during the summer that I can recall hearing a Weekly Top 40 even in part. (FYI - this clip is a bit loud, but it's the only one with the mix captioned correctly and it matches what was played; there's another one out there labeled the same, but it starts with JC instead of Chris.) "Nothing Really Matters" didn't really have a proper intro. It did also have a remix played, however (again, will have to check this after the show).

I listened to the 1999 countdown as well, twice actually. And I couldn’t figure out the polka meisters contest snippet for the life of me either. I didn’t like the “I Drive Myself Crazy” remix. Songs not meant to be an upbeat song. But overall, a really good countdown. However it’s one of those that you would probably hear a majority of the same songs back from a January countdown. Very slow moving charts in that era.

I didn’t like the “I Drive Myself Crazy” remix. Songs not meant to be an upbeat song. I wouldn't really call it "upbeat" even with the remix - maybe trying to be uptempo, but I'm not sure it quite gets there.

Look for the app to update soon - the present-day shows already have. I won't be able to re-check for another hour or two.

The D2K show has updated on the app. It’s April 21, 2007. A rare show featuring a time period not usually covered on the app.

Eh...they did 4/7 and 4/28 in 2020 and then 4/14 last year. Something from late May or June would be noteworthy.
The 90s have updated to April 17, 1993 (SS: Duran Duran "Come Undone"), which was done in 2020, and this is its 5th time overall.
ETA: The 80s have now updated to April 16, 1988 (SS: Rick Astley "Together Forever")...which was done just last year.

And speaking of shows that have been done last year, on the radio side it's 4/17/99, this being its third airing. I tuned in just as he was outro-ing "the Rizzuto sisters" - which would be Mulberry Lane, up two to #37. Which, of course, would place it at the week after what I tuned into yesterday.

2005 is the only other year to have not yet been done this year, not since December. But on the app, 2009 has easily the longer drought (not since November 2020).
