According to the Billboard Year-End / Decade-End special issue (December 19), the number of songs which climbed to the top of Billboard Hot 100 chart has steadily declined from 70s through 2000s.
There were 253 songs in the 70s, 231 in the 80s, 140 in the 90s, and then 129 in the 2000s. (There were 227 No.1 songs during August 1958 through December 1969.)
Billboard says that "drastic dip in No.1s the past two decades can be tied to the increased accuracy of the Hot 100, courtesy of Nielsen-based monitored airplay and pont-of-purchase sales data, which has formed the basis of the chart since 1991".
