Here's a little flashback for "soul" music fans like me!
40(Debut) SOS BAND - EVEN WHEN YOU SLEEP - This was their last R&B top 40 hit with Mary Davis singing lead. In 1992 Jimmy Jam told me at the Mall Of America that they had already broken up completely. How sad. Kinda similar to what Shalamar went through with the changes.
39 (Debut) NEW EDITION - ONCE IN A LIFETIME GROOVE - Tyrese used the chorus line from this hit on his remix to "What Am I Gonna Do" (upbeat remix). This was from the movie "Running Scared" which also gave us "Sweet Freedom" another hit that made the R&B top 40. Klymaxx's "Man Size Love" did not size up it peaked at #43 surprisingly.
38 (Debut) VESTA - ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY - This woman is funny and fly. I love her voice just as well. I used to kill that tape of hers, just about every song on that album was banging!
37(Debut) JANET JACKSON - CONTROL - The title track and the album was banging as well!
36(36) SHIRLEY JONES - LAST NIGHT I NEEDED SOMEBODY- Formerly of The Jones Girls and follow-up to her first solo #1 hit "Do You Get Enough Love". The song is very much under rated.
35 (31) JEFFREY OSBORNE - ROOM WITH A VIEW - Good but not his best. Another dance track from his album "Emotional". I prefer "Soweto" and "You Should Be Mine".
34(Debut) - BILLY OCEAN - LOVE IS FOREVER - Excellent ballad. An AC #1, there.
33(Debut) - JEFF LORBER F/KARYN WHITE - FACTS OF LOVE - To me this is unforgettable! Great urban dance track, there. This made the top ten here and #27 Pop a couple months later.
32(18) - FIVE STAR - CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE - UK version of the Jacksons, you know. When I was in England, these people were on fire, for real! This is another AT40 close call. It peaked at #41, just missing the 40.
31(38)BOBBY BROWN - Girlfriend - I have always had the boy's back and probably always will. This was the cut! His last studio album "Forever" was totally appalling at the same time, I just couldn't get into it.
30(34) ISSAC HAYES - IKE'S RAP/HEY GIRL- Same music on both sides of the record. One side he is rapping about a growing problem (still a problem) "crack" to his old lady and the other side he's singing to her. A month prior to this position this was the highest debut on the entire top 100 chart.
29(40) KOOL & THE GANG - VICTORY - The week's biggest mover with the top 40! This song is nothing special, I prefer their follow-up "Stone Love".
28(33) FULL FORCE - UNFAITHFUL SO MUCH - These guys never bit their tongue when it came to heartbreak. I love it! Great R&B/beat that was hot around this time period.
27(37)RUN DMC - YOU BE ILLIN - Love this song because when some folks get faded it freaking hilarious to watch them make a fool of themselves.
26(26) JAMES BROWN - GRAVITY - Another Dan Hartman produced song and this is the week that it peaked.
25(16) THE TEMPTATIONS - LADY SOUL - Casey Kasem mentioned on one of his promos for AT40 that this was on way to debuting, but it never did unfortunately. It hit #47 making it their last appearance on the Hot 100 with a hit credited to only them.
24(27) KURTIS BLOW - I'M CHILLIN - Unlike Chris Brown, his use of "Transformers" was quite original, yet at the same time the song faded into obscurity. That go-go beat was on fire!!
23(24) JEAN CARNE - FLAME OF LOVE - This song did not measure up to her #1 hit "Closer Than Close" from that summer. I wasn't feeling this one.
22(32)LEVERT - LET'S GO OUT TONIGHT - Vocals are phenomenal, but the song does not measure up to "Pop Pop Pop Goes My Mind".
21(10) TINA TURNER - TYPICAL MALE - Not really her best, I prefer "Two People" and her #15 Pop hit "What You Get Is What You See".
20(22) ARETHA FRANKLIN - JUMPIN JACK FLASH - This chart position was fueled by sales not airplay and I think you know why...This is a Rolling Stones rock based cover. This is one of favourite Aretha Franklin songs believe it or not.
19(13) HOWARD HEWITT - I'M FOR REAL - Ex-Shalamar member and ex-husband of singer/actress Nia Peeples gave us this touching ballad with Kenny G on the sax.
18(28) ANITA BAKER - CAUGHT UP IN THE RAPTURE - One of her best songs ever.
17(15) PHYLISS HYMAN - OLD FRIEND - Very much under rated. It's been 14 years since she went away. A lot us miss her so.
16(25) PATTI LABELLE - KISS AWAY THE PAIN - She has always worked that magic with her words, voice, and the chorus. When she sings, it could send a lot of pain away!
15(19) CHICO DEBARGE - TALK TO ME - Love it! Hot dance record! You know as soon as he got out of jail, he became even more popular. Remember "No Guarantee" and "Give You What You Want".
14(12) GENERAL KANE - CRACKED KILLED APPLEJACK - Mitch McDowell was murdered in 1992 as I just learned. I heard this only once before. Love the song's message!
13(08) CLUB NOUVEAU - JEALOUSY - Nice n funky, now this was the cut! The extended version is off the chain as well. Another Ipod banger!
12 (21) READY FOR WORLD - LOVE YOU DOWN - No. Just No.
11(06) CAMEO - WORD UP - Never really got into this one, but I prefer "Back N Forth" and "Candy".
10(17) COMMODORES - GOIN' TO THE BANK - I tell ya some these wives are big spenders, ya know. That's what I like about this song, it's funny.
09(11) MILLIE JACKSON - HOT!WILD!UNRESTRICTED! CRAZY LOVE! - Nice midtempo smoove jammer! When I see the artist's name, it turns my stomach, despite most of her great work. She's too raunchy and seems unlady like.
08(14) ONE WAY - DON'T THINK ABOUT IT - This is also obscure, yet a fine and smoove silky soul midtempo number for these guys.
07(07) JESSE JOHNSON & SLY STONE - CRAZAY - Yes! Another hot one!
06(09) LIONEL RICHIE - LOVE WILL CONQUER ALL - Excellent and even better than "Dancing On The Ceiling" in which I totally despised.
05(05) STACY LATTISAW - NAIL IT TO THE WALL - First big hit since "Love On A Two Way Street" peaked at #2 back in 1982.
04(02) GREGORY ABBOTT - SHAKE YOU DOWN - No. Just no.
03(04) HUMAN LEAGUE - HUMAN - This was #1 on the R&R Urban chart and this was the peak week here. I love this record just as well. Jam & Lewis knew how to work a ballad!
02(01) MELBA MOORE & FREDDIE JACKSON - JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE - I really wasn't feeling this one. But Freddie broke an R&B chart record by replacing himself at #1 with the next song I am about to comment on.
01(03) FREDDIE JACKSON - TASTY LOVE - Superb! He didn't waste any time on releasing a follow-up album. His last hit from his last album was "Love Is Just A Touch Away" was on the charts just that past summer.
