Did anyone notice Casey's (or his writers') difficulty with simple math during today's countdown from 7/10/71? Today's #26 (Don't Knock My Love (Part 1) by Wilson Pickett) dropped from #15 on the 7/3/71 chart, and Casey said it dropped 9 notches. Today's #14 (Draggin' the Line by Tommy James) climbed from #25 on the 7/3/71 chart, and Casey said it climbed 9 notches.

^ The regular countdown or the special? It was the regular countdown. I tuned in just in time to hear the number-three song of the week (Bob Seger's "Shakedown").

I enjoyed hearing the first show, for the first time, though I don't get why they cut it off right after Casey outroed "Mama Told Me Not To Come". Even in the 1975 rebroadcast Casey must have said something to sign off, but it wasn't here. No credits, no "keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars" (SXM 7 & 8 usually leave that stuff in even when they don't play the whole theme song), and about five seconds of the theme music. Still, it was great to hear a bit of history, and they did leave all the songs in there (including "A Song of Joy".) It was also fun to hear a few kinks being worked out; I noticed a couple of spots where Casey paused with an "uhhh", the sort of minor flub that would be edited out in later years, but which here lends to the real-time feel, as if he were broadcasting live. When Casey joined AMFM radio networks, American Top 40 with Casey Kasem was returning. AMFM decided on the announcment to give out the very 1st American Top 40 from 7/4/70 on 3 CDs as their promotion item. However, the promotion CDs cut off all 3 hour endings, including the closing credits. Thus, the copy XM aired on 7/4/09, was probably the AMFM promotional CDs.

I just bought a new car. I'm receiving XM radio as a trial period. The 80s channel did air the 7/4/1987 show in the morning on 7/12/09. However, the Sunday night airing on 7/12/09 is the 7/3/1982 show. I thought XM 80s on 8 aired the same show twice on Sundays.

They did until sometime around February. Since then, for the most part the Sunday night show has been a replay of the previous week's show.

I noticed a couple of other factual errors; Donny Osmond's "Sweet And Innocent" was said to have peaked at #10 (it actually reached #7), while Dave and Ansell Collins were said to be English, when they're actually Jamaican. Still, this was a very good countdown; I liked how all the original extras were left in, even the Ink Spots' "The Gypsy", which dates back to 1946.

"The Gypsy" might've been deleted by Premiere if they ran the show on terrestrial radio.

I've been listening to the '87 show throughout the week an noticed 2 things....so far. #1. Casey DID say the George Michael song title "I Want your sex"! #2. There was a song by the "Partland Brothers" that was CLEARLY edited in. There was a drastic audio change from Caseys voice to the recording of the song. At the end, you hear why, when Caseys outcues the song, his voice is very scratchy. Presumably a damaged original LP?? How could Shannon of let this show slide thru? An why such a crapy recording of the song? (i've never heard of the song before so presumably its a rare find, but couldn't you of just taken the song from one of the next shows or a previous show?) I found it odd.

Also, Kim Wilde's "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which was #30 and also a Long Distance Dedication, was deleted from last week's SXM broadcast (though the LDD tease was left in.) I'm guessing this was one of the too-many errors SXM makes with these; maybe it'll be corrected on rebroadcast.

July 19, 2009 - SXM 80s on 8 played 7/16/1983 and Did not skip the LDD's. That may have been because both LDD's were songs from the 80s. We will have to wait and see if they edit LDDs for non 80s songs in the future.
