Anyone know tomorrow's show? 1971 is now the longest year without play. Great music too if it is featured--Sly and The Family Stone, Melanie, Don McLean to name a few. In many instances, XM follows Premiere, so...... There is the possibility that this weekend's show will be from 1971. 1971 last aired in September. December 18, 1971 was last aired by SXM ten years ago. Even if SXM moves on to the year-ender, the weekend show could be the 1971 Year End Countdown.

Dec. 23-24, 2023: Now let’s go back to this week in 1977 - Steve Porcaro - December 25, 1977 (Year End Countdown) Looks like they're splitting the Top 100 of '77 countdown across two weeks like they did in 2007-08, though the last time it was played they did the full Top 100 in one show on 1/2/16. (for some reason they also did the Top 50 of '79 the previous weekend on 12/26/15) --DDA

There is a new PD at the 70’s channel on Sirius I believe. I was not the least bit surprised that they didn’t play a 1973 show. The exact thing happened a couple weeks ago. They were doing a 1978 weekend and the AT40 they aired was from 1971 or something. There has been a major shift in the playlist as of late. Previously you could almost call it The Bee Gees channel. Now they have been going quite heavy on early 70’s hits. Barbra Streisand, The Singing Nun, Tom Jones, etc. Songs from 1970-1974 dominate the daily playlist at the moment. Whoever is programming the channel right now clearly has a favorite era. Also notice that Wheel of Casey almost always lands in the early part of the decade. I hate how they play the 8-minute version of "American Pie," even though Casey had the good taste to play the edit. I hate how they play the 8-minute version of "Won't Get Fooled Again," a song that peaked at #15. They play the LP versions of "Don't Fear the Reaper, "Piano Man" and "Night Moves." And why I hate this so much is because: They never play the album version of "That Lady, " a #6 hit, just the short radio edit. They have cut off the "Force has a lot of power" intro from Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," a #1 song. They have cut off the "slow jam" intro to "Boogie Nights," a #2 hit, and a song they used to promote their channel! They have removed the iconic hand claps intro from "Car Wash." Just criminal. And now on "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters, they have inserted female singers after the line "I turn on the radio" with the retort, "to totally 70's." Do you notice the racial element to these choices? I do. It really bothers me.

It is a good time for another guest-hosted show this weekend. Consider: 1971,1972,1976 & 1977 are end of year specials. 1973 & 1975 has aired this decade. 1978 was a Wheel of Casey show in 2023. 1974 last aired in 2018. One opinion: This week’s show was very heavily edited. Someone went overboard with the edit button. That leaves 1979. January 6, 1979 was guest hosted by Marc Elliott.

Should we expect Part 2 next week--January 13th? It seems kind of late to be doing yearend countdowns.

Jan. 6-7, 2024: Now let’s go back to this week in 1971 - Englebert Humperdinck - January 2, 1971 (Top 80 of 1970) Part 1 When Casey played the Top 80 of 1970, he may have played some songs he had never played on AT40, (songs from before AT40 came on the air in 1970), correct?
