Pay close attention about halfway through. You all know what I mean... Said Casey, "Didn't you just know this would happen? Here's a case where the chart position and the song title are one and the same. At #18 with a bullet, here's, that's right, 'Eighteen with a Bullet' and moving up. Pete Wingfield". I wonder if this was entirely a coincidence or "organic" move, or someone in the Billboard chart department decided it would be neat to fudge things a bit to put the song at its titular position; it was moving up from #23 into the top 20 so it didn't look obviously manipulated. The song peaked at #15 the following week. It's such a good quote, we've posted it twice in five days. ☺ This is not exactly "#9 Dream" from earlier in the same year, but yeah, it has the look and feel of a slight manipulation.

Record World, meanwhile, just missed making it a four-for. The song was at #19 with a bullet on 11/22/75 there, then moved to #16 with a bullet the next week, and then peaked at #15.

Now that SiriusXM has completed its trifecta of decade countdowns with Casey's top 50 of the 70s special, it's the 70s' turn to get the comparison treatment. In this table, column two shows each song's performance on the Casey countdown, as tabulated by the AT40 staff. In column three, we see Billboard's perspective, pulled from the all-time list that they published in August to mark the 60th anniversary of the Hot 100. (These are the 70s numbers, not overall.) The last column shows the placement according to the book Ranking the '70s, by Dann Isbell and Bill Carroll. They took all of the charted songs in Cash Box throughout the decade and ranked them from #1 to #5350. Along with a weekly chart position point scale, they added a factor using a process they call normalization. With this exclusive formula, they were able to adjust a song's score based on the overall chart action for the year in which it came out. So their rankings tend to favor those records that had a longer run in the upper reaches of the CB chart.
