Should have been July 29, 1978. Then between the 2 series, the first and last week's at #1 for Andy Gibb would have been played this week. Could be the only artist whose first and last weeks at #1 were exactly a year apart. Certainly the only one with as many as 13 weeks at #1 in that span.

Back before the merger, and before Sirius butchered the countdowns, this was the weekend 10 years ago that XM ran its marathon weekend and started broadcasting AT40 shows. It is hard to believe it has already been ten years. Time flies.

This week's countdown kicked off with one of favorite songs from the year, Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Summer Sand". In these early shows Casey usually said that Dawn was seven member group. This isn't so far from the truth. The first album with "Candida" and "Knock Three Times" was Tony Orlando singing lead with a bunch of studio singers. It wasn't until around the time of "Summer Sand" that the two girls became the full time singers. I've been doing research because I am going to see Tony Orlando & Dawn tonight. They are only doing three shows this year, two earlier this week and tonight. It's an invitation only show at the casino. I get complimentary tickets to Tony Orlando every year, I never take them because I always think, "What good is Tony without Dawn?" So when these popped up, I had to take them. Never been a huge TO&D fan, but I have faint memories of the tv show, and of course I know the songs. Should be a interesting time warp!

^Loved Telma Hopkins on "Gimme A Break." I think she was also in "Family Matters" but I didn't watch it.

The show was actually really good. In addition to all of their hits, they also did a medley of songs the two girls sang background on. "Reach Out I'll Be There","I heard It Thru The Grapevine","Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch" and "Theme To Shaft" it's actually Telma Hopkins who says "Shut yo mouth" during the song. They showed a clip of all the TV shows Telma worked on, Bosom Buddies, Gimmie A Break, Family Matters, and some others that I never heard of. A fun show, I'd say check it out if they come to your area, but as far as I know the three shows they did this week are all they are doing. At least for now, maybe the will book more shows later.

At number 39 is "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Kenny Loggins with Stevie Nicks. What's interesting is that although Casey credits her, she isn't actually credited on the single. On the album she's listed among the musicians on the album. It's clearly a duet so it's odd that she isn't give full credit. My guess is because she was with Warner Bros as part of Fleetwood Mac at the time and Kenny was on Columbia. Although in 1978 her solo deal was already being plotted out.

On this week's show Casey made an odd statement, in the introduction to "The Morning After" he said "Here's a song that wasn't a hit until after it was released, way after it was released...." Well aren't ALL songs hits after they are released? How many were hits before they were released?
