I had the most misfortune of not discovering the Format Lab channel until November of last year. I decided to leave my recorder on to capture everything they had to offer. I only managed to get 5 shows before they killed the stream for good the next morning.

Actually the stream returned earlier this year. And it was when it returned that shows were out of order, messed up, etc. it lasted for another few months and then was removed for good.

The 8/6/77 XM show was interesting as it was about 10 days before Elvis Presley died and he was peaking (pre-death) at #31 with "Way Down". The song would ultimately drop off the Top 40 and jump back in for a second run for a (post-death) peak of #18. I personally felt this was the best song he had done in years and was disappointed at the #31 peak. It's a shame that he had to die before the song received the recognition it deserved.

If in 1977 Billboard had been using today's technology (Soundscan, download tracking, monitoring audience impressions, etc.) then "Way Down" would probably have shot to #1, and a bunch of other Elvis singles and albums would also have likely re-entered the charts, as it's been said that people surged to record stores in massive numbers to purchase Elvis recordings, and there was probably a lot of memorial airplay as well.

I'm listening to the 8/11/73 countdown as I write this-I'm not sure if I'll listen to the 8/4/73 show tomorrow because I'll hear the same songs over again.

Ah, but if the only motivation for listening to AT40 was to hear the songs, then you could simply listen to the music off of CDs or old records. AT40 brings the stories, the details of the chart action, and the instant time machine of hearing a program (almost) exactly as it was originally recorded back in the day. I will happily spend another three hours in 1973 reminiscing about the good ole days. The sad part will be when I have to return back to 2008.

Last week on XM 8, the "American Top 40" show was from August 22, 1987.
As for this week's "AT40" 70s show, I definitely enjoyed it!!! So many great songs, it's hard for me to pick a favorite. "An Everlasting Love," "Shadow Dancing", "Hopelessly Devoted To You", "Last Dance", "Three Times A Lady", "Dance With Me," "Life's Been Good," "Grease," "Got To Get You Into My Life," "Take A Chance on Me," "Love Is In The Air." I could name a few more but....you know!! This, of course, was the week those "Bad Boys Of Rock" shoved "Baby Bee Gee" out of Number 1. (Translation: "Miss You" by the Rolling Stones ended Andy Gibb's ("Shadow Dancing") 7-week reign at the top.) Speaking of the Stones, I remember hearing a story about them somewhere that a service-station owner refused to let them use their restroom so someone from the band decided to relieve himself on the station's garage door. I know for sure it was not on "AT40," but I wonder if Casey, or one of his substitute hosts, ever did tell such a story on "AT40."

I caught two skips. The first was during Casey's outro for "The Groove Line" and second was during "An Everlasting Love." This is the first time I caught skips that weren't mentioned in Pete's book.

I dug out my vinyl copy of the program and listened to these two portions of the show -- and detected no skips. Apparently they're just in XM's copy.
