Unless XM played a year end show years ago, I was not a subscriber then, then this Top 50 of the 70s is the very first YE Show ever played on XM.
The first YE show of the 70's ever played commercially since the 70s.
Here is some more trivia: The last 70s YE countdown PROBABLY ever played commercially on the Radio, was the 1/5/80 70s YE Decade Countdown; the same exact YE countdown played for the very first time since this same countdown was played back then. So, in over 26 1/2 years, this same YE countdown was commercially played back to back .

Looks like the '70s marathon is continuing... now playing is the Top 50 of the 1970's special! I missed hearing this show on 1-1-80 because KDWB/Minneapolis first played it after their own countdown ended and saying Happy New Year. KDWB had a Top 63 of 1979 (630AM). Lots of static that night listening the AM radio. I didn't realize they were playing it (the Top 50 of 1979) until I listened to the tapes. I'm glad that the "AM" era is over. It's very possible this was the only time KDWB aired the special decade countdown.

They did play a number #1 time sweep of the 70's at the end of the 1-5-80 show, then the first #1 of the 80's, which was a different song than AT40.

I wonder how this chart was compiled. Usually, YE charts were compiled from chart points. "Let It Be" by the Beatles had a very quick chart run and certainly wouldn't rack up more points than a song that stayed at #1 for 3 weeks with 16 weeks in the top 40.
Of course it's the Beatles so there's no way I'd complain. I'd be happy if every song on the countdown was from them lol.

I just think it is so awesome that these shows are airing somewhere. Lets just hope that they stay on here for a long time!

the rankings for the top 50 of the 70's were compiled by AT40. The top 50 of 1979, which also aired during the Christmas and New Year holidays, was from billboard. I disagree with the rankings on this show, but the music is terrific.

I would LOVE to hear more YE countdowns. Those were always the ones I looked forward to the most through the year. I particularly liked when AT40 did their own.

I listened to that station from just a young kid about 4 years old until I can't remember when I stopped listening to it. Thanks for reminding me of it....

Regarding Alfred's list of shows played on XM, I did notice a small glitch in the 11/11/78 show: Towards the end of of #11 You've Never Done it Like That - Captain and Tennille, the song I'll be There - Jackson Five plays. This is the Archive song for the end of that our. The the Jackson Five song ends, Casey outros the Captain and Tennille and then intros the J5. Then the end of hour theme plays.
I'm not sure how the show was edited, but it looks like there were three tracks involved and the intended third in sequence (I'll Be There) was played second in sequence.

I was just sitting here breaking apart the long files from the 70s marathon this past weekend and all of a sudden something crossed my mind. Maybe I misread something along the way, but was Shannon digitizing his OWN shows to be run on XM? Or did Premiere give the shows to XM to be done?? I am thinking Shannon said he was using his own but I am not totally sure on that one.

For those curious, last nights airing was of the 03/02/74...which was aired during the marathon as well.

It's now 9:11 PM CST-why is AT40 not on? Isn't it supposed to be on at 10:00PM ET which would be 9:00 PM CST?

It seems like XM is playing quite a few AT40 shows from 1979 lately, I think most, if not all, of the AT40 shows from the past month on XM's 70s channel have been from 1978 or 1979. Now, I enjoy listening to the AT40 shows from these years, but I really would like to hear more of the early AT40 shows as well (1972, for example) I also noticed that XM has not run any AT40's from 1976 yet. It would be nice if XM could run different AT40's from different years (They were supposed to have one from October 1970 today (September 30), but they put on one from June 1979 instead, that's two 1979 shows in a row!!! Likewise, the 80s channel has shown a similar lack of variety in their scheduling of the old AT40 shows. I noticed that two of their shows in the past month were from November 1986. A little suggestion for the folks at XM: I do appreciate you putting the old AT40 shows back on the air, but I would also appreciate a little more variety in the scheduling of the shows (for example, have a 1972 show one day, then a 1977 show the next day, or for the 80s channel, one from 1981 on Thursday, then one from. say, 1988 on Sunday, rather than having more than one show from the same year during the same month) Thanks, I just needed to get that off my chest!!

Just discovered that AT40 on 80s on 8 started at 7am Central time today. I was working in my mom's kennel and ran back to my room to tape the show but missed the first 6 songs (recap of lw top 3) and #40-part of #38. If anyone happened to get this portion of the show (Nov 15, 1980), please send me these songs and in exchange, I'll provide a copy of any of the shows in my collection.
Thanks
John
