It is generally accepted that, after the breakup, the music made by the individual Beatles was no match for what they made as a group. But there were occasional flashes of the old brilliance. I thought it would be interesting to see who likes what.
I'll start with a Top Ten off the top of my head.
1) "Imagine" - John / Yes, it's an easy pick because it's made so many "all-time" lists over the years and has been evoked countless times. In it's simplicity it's just plain awesome! I always think of it as a "born late" Beatle classic.
2) "My Sweet Lord" - George / One point I've taken from the "Anthology" is that Harrison was really starting to burst out as a writer just as the band was falling apart. This was his third masterpiece after "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun".
3) "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" - Paul / What a fabulous piece of nonsense from the always-whimsical one! I still chuckle at the "phone' part and at whatever he mumbles after Linda's "Pot of pie?" Also, one of the best produced records ever!
4) "Photograph" - Ringo / Pure class! Wonderful arrangement! A crowd-pleaser in his All-Starr Band live shows.
5) "Mull Of Kintyre" - Paul / Was Paul taking a cue from John Denver here? It is along the same line as "Rocky Mountain High" but this one has bagpipes! ;D I'll never understand why "Girls' School" became the American hit over this.
6) "Beautiful Boy" - John / His death made it even more poignant but even before that this "Double Fantasy" track stood out as the most thoughtful. This song, more than "Watching The Wheels", defined his life from 1975-1980!
7) "Love" - John / Beautiful piano melody and another simply expressed lyric; This one is so underrated!
8) "Got My Mind Set On You" - George / Catchy pop-rocker that brought him back after he was out of sight for most of the 80s
9) "It Don't Come Easy" - Ringo / Good rockin'! Need I say more?
10) "Cold Turkey" - John / Even if you've never experienced withdrawl symptoms, Lennon draws you into that nightmare with the darkest thing he ever came up with. One scarey record!
