In the next week or so, after the last posters weigh in here and below on the AT 10 with Casey Kasem section, it occurred to me that the Fun and Games website will be mostly trivia and recollections. I had a different thought however. How about if we created a new section to discuss current countdown shows and or syndicated programs INSPIRED by AT 40 and its various offshoots? The concept of uniting the country and even the english speaking world behind a long pop music countdown, during the rock era, was the brainchild of Casey and Ron Jacobs. Over the years, I have met people whose immersion in pop/rock music begins and ends with AT 40. In other words, they would use the program exclusively as a way to keep up with current music trends-basically ignoring music in between airings of the program.
A national chart show featuring 40 pop hits was truly a unique concept. Even Your Hit Parade, the early pop music countdown could only feature 10 songs per week. The impact of this program was so massive that I wonder how many casual listeners know that Rick Dees show actually began in 1983 over a dispute between Gannett Broadcasting owned KIIS-FM in Los Angeles and ABC/Watermark over the airing of national spots on AT 40.
Casey (or Mike Kasem) will no longer be carrying a baton for music countdown programs, but Rick, Ryan, Chris Leary and Randy Jackson still will be. My vision would be to have a section like the one that this post is on to discuss, debate and analyze the programming of the various weekly countdown shows, as well as other syndicated programs in the AT 40 mold-similiar to what is done on the Pulse music board-but with the insights and knowledge, that only Casey inspired fans can bring to the discussion. It would be a go to message board for me each weekend as the countdown programs are starting up.
Are there any other takers out there? If not, I'd be interested to read your opinion as to why not.
