Yes, the final show was very touching. For you chart buffs one last time: Was there one final error on AT20 and AT10? "Alone" by Heart was a #1 Pop hit in 1987 and not 1985. He corrected himself at the end of the song on AT10 but I could have sworn he said 1985 on one of the shows. As an eighties enthusiast I also noticed the error on the AT20 show. If the staff corrected the script for the AT10 show it is a sign that the recording of the voice tracks was really a separate thing. On the AT20 the error was not detected and therefore not corrected.

I thought it was nice how the show ended with Casey's usual saying, and no closing billboards or plugs. Very nice. Truly a class act, and will be missed.

The show was very touching and emotional... I'm pleasantly surprised that Casey acknowledged his retirement on here. The LDD Adam got on the show really sums up how we all feel about Casey and how his shows have touched us all during the years. And the history of his association with countdowns definitely provided for a nice lead-in into the #1 song. I'll definitely miss listening to Casey each week (though there'll still be the reruns of the 70's and 80's AT40 shows), but he's worked hard enough to earn his retirement, and left us with a legacy of counting down the hits that spans generations.

Just got done listening online and it was a very good sendoff. We all knew this day had to come sooner or later, but it sure doesn't make it any easier. I didn't get to hear the LDD, but hopefully I will get the CD's so I can listen to it. Casey has earned his retirement. He will most certainly be missed.

I just finally heard the final AT10/20 today. I was out of town this weekend. I was sharing a hotel room this weekend. I warned everyone, I have to listen to Casey this weekend, its his last show. The local radio station in the area started Casey at 6 am Sunday morning in Northern Michigan for AT10. Thankfully, everyone was understanding of me turning the radio on in the morning, since they knew I've listen to Casey for decades.
I was getting emotional when Alone by Heart was being played. I felt I would now be alone without Casey counting down the hits every weekend.
Everyone in the hotel room agreed it was a very nice sendoff of the ending of Casey Kasem countdown show.
I did hear AT20 Sunday evening via the webstreams when I returned home.
Thank you Casey and enjoy your retirement!

I listened to the final edition of "AT10" over the weekend-The fact that Casey zeroed in on the top recording acts of the past forty years was great-I couldn't believe it took Casey & his crew 18 hours to tape the initial countdown thirty-nine years ago-I hope Casey does consider writing his memoirs-I'll definitely read that book.

mr jukebox, half the problem with recording in "real time" vs "voicetracking" is that it's far easier to fix with a voice track then in real time...
listening to the July 4th. 1970 show again on sirius, I could easily tell he was doing it in real time, as his speed slowed or sped up to hit vocal on some of the songs. Not common in the world of voicetracking, as you don't here the song, just read the copy and sometimes have a time to hit.
With real time, if you flub a line, you have to do it all over again, music, jingles and all, go back to the start of the segment. with voice tracking, you start at the last paragraph of the script....the engineer mixed the voice track with all the other elements...and unless he screws up repeatedly, it's a significant time saver.
The other fact is that it was still in it's growing pains, establishing formats and routines for production. That will also eat up time to get "into the groove" of producing any show. once you set a pattern, you become more efficient.

Great LDD Adams. Couldn't have said it better myself. It's great that Casey didn't object to reading a dedication to himself, considering how modest he is. I'm glad that he acknowledged that it was the last show and said some memorable words. The 2 times that he left American Top 40 and on the last Casey's Top 40, he made no mention about the end on the show.
I usually don't listen to AT10/20 because I prefer to listen to the classics from 20-30 years ago, but I had to catch this one to hear what Casey said. It's sad to see him finally go, but it's good to know that his voice will still be coming in loud and strong on the classic 70s & 80s show every week. He will live on in his recordings.

The first you mentioned was Heart's "Alone" was from 1985, not 1987. On the final AT10 show, Casey made the mistake the first time, but corrected himself the second time around. Secondly, he said "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan was from 1997. I believe it was from 1994.

Guessing Casey normally does AT20 first and then AT10 later.

Secondly, he said "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan was from 1997. I believe it was from 1994. It's not a "mistake", per se: "Possession" actually didn't make the U.S. Hot AC charts until 1997, when it peaked at #19, though it was originally released in Canada in '94.

I completely missed this weekend's broadcast. Would I be able to get a copy from anyone on this board? I'm willing to pay shipping, handling, etc.
If so, contact me at this e-mail address...petefernbaugh@aol.com.
Thank you!

I haven't asked this because my entire collection of AT40 shows I used to have was thrown out by accident and don't really have anything to offer, but my computer was being repaired the weekend these shows aired and I was unable to hear them online in their entirety through my iPhone and obviously was not able to record them. I did get the final hour and posted a scoped version of the end of show on You Tube but that is all. Is there any way I can get a copy of both AT10 and AT20 from the final week from someone?
PM me if you would be so kind to do so.

I finally listened to this show this week. And aggree w/ pretty much everything thats been said about it here. I was honestly expecting a lil more history or 'look-back's but all in all an excellent show.
As to why I took this long to listen to it......not sure really. I was in NYC on that fatefull weekend an had set my cassette deck to record the show back home. Just never dug it up to listen to it till now. I guess the main reason I wanted to hear it now is because I'm working on editing together a Casey Kasem Decade end special, Top 40 of the 2000's an combining it w/ exerpts from the 40th aniversary show an was looking for more content to insert. I'll listen to AT-10s final show next.

I remember listening to the AT20 finale nearly 2 1/2 years ago, and I must say it was very touching to hear his voice one last time. His voice did sound a lot different as opposed to back in 2006 (I wonder why?). Sadly, Casey Kasem never got to do a tribute to Michael Jackson, who passed away one week before the AT20 finale aired.
I agree, American Top ## is not the same without Casey at the mic. I do admit, I lost interest in AT40 since Ryan Seacrest took the helm. I'd rather Rick Dees over Ryan Seacrest. I'd rather AT40: The 80's over current AT40!
And btw, does anybody have the AT20 finale (in its entirety) to send me?
