All the shows were special for me since I started listening in 1977. My favorite years were probably 1979 through 1982 when the opening chords of the theme segued into the #3 song from last week. Not sure why, but that was always a special moment for me. Really liked the 12/13/80 show with Casey's special intro to John Lennon's "Starting Over" and all of the year-end and specialty shows, including "AT40 Goes to the Movies", The Top 50 of the 70's, and "The Giants of Rock 'n' Roll". I was always sorry we only got The Top 50 of 1979. I realize that was because of the 70's countdown, but I wish I had Casey counting down the Top 100 of that year. Thanks for all of the great memories, Casey. Your star shines bright.

The funniest part of that one was when Casey was translating "Radetzky March" and burst out laughing and had to start again. From what I heard, several months earlier, as he was introing a song, he laughed, all the way until the song started. Not sure what song it was or what he was laughing about, though. I think it might've been "It's Been Awhile" by Staind, but I'm not sure what week it was. Just checked... and indeed, I had that topic saved from the old R&R boards from when it happened. It was apparently the week of 11/24/2001, where Casey was reciting lyrics to "It's Been Awhile" and laughing at them.

My all-time favorite AT40 broadcast had to be from March 7, 1987. Charlie Van Dyke covered for Casey Kasem that week, and I heard songs that I really enjoy that never got played on the radio ever since. Songs such as We Connect by Stacey Q and Communards doing a cover version of a disco classic Don't Leave Me This Way. The first quarter of 1987 was a great period that year for music. And while some of it did linger in the second quarter of that year, the theme music did change to a more hyperactive beat and I didn't care for the altered theme that much. Though the "Number ##" cues from 1984 did continue on until early in 1989 - a few months into Shadoe's run.
After listening to the May 26, 1984 broadcast in recent hours, I do enjoy that episode too. It's probably a close second to the broadcast I mentioned above. Especially the overseas LDD from Kid to May and the song Just The Two of Us by Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers being played. A great smooth song and very relaxing. Plus Run Run Away by Slade does kind of remind me of a Newfoundland band covering the song in the late-1990s (I think the Newfoundland band in question was Great Big Sea). They did a great job, but I like Slade's version slightly more than that of Great Big Sea's version.
Yes, even though I am a fan of Casey Kasem, my two top favorite episodes didn't feature Casey Kasem at all.

And here is a video of Great Big Sea's remake of Slade's Run Runaway:
What do you think of it?
And I did check out The Black Swan's site - I did download a select few broadcasts from that site.
