This past weekend,a May 1977 countdown was featured-One of the songs played was "Got To Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye-It appears that the wrong side of the record was played-Has that ever happened before in the history of "AT40"?

There have probably been several others, but I instantly thought of these:
9/18 and 9/25/71--Glass Bottle's "I Ain't Got Time Anymore" was on the chart, but the B-side ("The First Time"?) was played instead. Since it wasn't a double sided hit, I assume it was a mistake.
12/16/72--Rod Stewart's "Angel" was the A-side, but the B-side, "Los Paraguayos" (sp?) was heard. This was the record's only week in the top 40, so the actual hit side was never heard on the show.
7/4/76--a special show for the Bicentennial weekend, with the #1 song on each July 4 for the last 40 years. For 1938, the song supposed to be played was "Says My Heart" by Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra (sung by Harriet), but the instrumental B-side, called "Whoa, Babe" was heard instead.

If I'm not mistaken, the wrong side of a Guns & Roses record was played during the Shadoe Stevens era of "AT40"-Does anybody know what the correct side should've been?

Off the top of my head I remember two songs during 1975 getting the wrong version played. I believe the first was when Bad Company's "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" debuted--it was a different Bad Company song. Ditto for the Osmonds when "The Proud One" entered the 40 later in the year. Gaye's "Got To Give It Up"--the flip side--was played for several weeks before the producers finally got it right.

Unfortunately,I'm at work right now & don't have access to Pete's book-The Bad Company song was played on the 5/31/75 show-Pete's recap lists the song that was played in error.

The Ozzie Nelson faux pas didn't occur because of the wrong side being played. According to an AT40 memo printed in Mr. Battistini's book, it was a wrong album cut that was played. This makes sense since albums were the only format available in the late 30s; and even in '76 I doubt there were Ozzie reissues on 45.

Actually 78s were the only records available in the 1930s; albums of the time were box sets of 78s. Perhaps in 1976 Casey or somebody on the staff had an LP of Ozzie Nelson's hits and they put the needle on the wrong track by accident?

One other comment to make about the Marvin Gaye song. I just got done listening to my copy of the 5-14-77 show, and the song was at #9 in its 4th week and it was the flipside that was STILL getting airplay! Man,you'd have thought the producers would have caught that after at least the second week!
