Throughout the rock era, many artists who were member of successful groups hit No. 1 as member of those groups before hittlng No. 1 as a solo artists. The other day, I was asking myself, if any artist have hit No. 1 as a solo artist, before hitting No. 1 as a member of a group? So far, I have found only 2 artists have pulled off this rare feat, and they are:
Phil Collins John Waite
Phil Collins hit No. 1 in 1984 as a solo artist with the song, "Against All Odds" (Take A Look At Me Now), and he hit No. 1 as a solo artist two more times in 1985 with "One More Night" and "Sussudio" and in a duet with Marilyn Martin called "Separate Lives". Phil had hit No. 1 4 times before he had his first and only No. 1 song with Genesis called "Invisible Touch" in 1986.
John Waite scored a No. 1 song as a solo artist back in 1984 called "Missing You" and 5 years later in 1989, hit No. 1 with "When I See You Smile" as a member of Bad English.
Those are the only 2 artists that I know of who hit No. 1 as a solo artist before hitting No. 1 as a member of a group. If anybody knows any other artists who have done it, then let me know.

On the Hot 100, there's been one other artist who performed that feat. Fergie had several solo number ones before finally hitting the top as a member of the Black Eyed Peas a few weeks ago with "Boom Boom Pow". (On AT40, of course, BEP's "Where Is The Love?" hit #1 before Fergie broke out as a solo artist.)

Yes, it did occur to me that Fergie is another artist who hit No. 1 as a solo artist before hitting No. 1 as a member of a group. Back in 2006, she hit No. 1 with "London Bridge" as a solo artist, and in 2007, she hit No. 1 twice with "Glamorous" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" and just earlier this month, she and her group, the Black Eyed Peas hit No. 1 with their latest hit, "Boom Boom Pow".
