England Dan Seals, who was half of the 1970's pop duo England Dan and John Ford Coley, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, of cancer at his daughter's home in Nashville. He was 61.
England Dan And John Ford Coley were best known for their breakthrough hit, "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight," which reached #4 on the Cash Box pop singles chart. Ironically, when that song was in the top 10, so was "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts. The latter duo included Jim Seals, Dan's brother. Two brothers in the top 10 at the same time as half of separate duos is truly a chart rarity.
England Dan and John Ford Coley's followup, "Nights Are Forever Without You," was also a top tenner, peaking at #10. The duo also had top 40 pop hits with "It's Sad To Belong" (#13), "Gone Too Far" (#17), "We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again" (#14) and "Love Is The Answer" (#13). "You Can't Dance" was an uptempo popular hit for the duo in the summer of 1978 but it only reached #74.
Dan Seals went on to have a country solo career in the 1980's. Two of his solo hits crossed over to the pop chart..."Bop" (#48) and "Late At Night" (#74).
Tony Gottlieb, Seals' manager for about 30 years, told the Associated Press that his client had been diagnosed with lymphoma two years ago. "He was very positive," Gottlieb said. "He participated in several clinical trials to assist with research of this type of lymphoma.".
In 1992, Seals told the AP, "I've loved to play and sing from the moment I knew what it was." Indeed, Seals used to perform with his dad and was inspired by Hank Williams and the Grand Ole Opry people.
Dan and Jim Seals had been performing as the duo Seals and Seals until Dan got sick. As Seals and Seals, they've recorded at least eight songs together that are expected to be released to the public.
