Which station did you listen to Casey Kasem's Westwood One countdown shows. Also, did your station have Casey's Top 40, Casey's Countdown, or Casey's Hot 20?

WOWF 99.5FM 9/92-12/92 Casey's Top 40(Only call letter change)

No station 1/93-3/93. WOWF changed to news/talk format. WW1 had to find a new station for Detroit.

WKQI 95.5 FM 4/93-11/94 Casey's Countdown

WKQI 95.5 FM 11/94 to 2/98 Casey's Hot 20.

CT40 debuted in Cincinnati on WKRQ in January 1989. (I think it was Stupor Bowl Sunday.) This distressed Shadoe fans greatly, as it eliminated the morning airing of AT40. (Shadoe was still heard at 9 PM, but you had to stay up until 1 AM to hear the whole thing. Thus, Cincinnati was probably one of very few American markets at the time where you could only hear all of Shadoe by staying up until 1 AM - on a Monday morning, no less.)

CT40 stayed on WKRQ at least into the mid-'90s.

I was living in 4 different places during Casey's WW1 years and I was fortunate to be able to listen to at least one of his shows at any one time wherever I was.

In 1989/early 90s, it was CFDR-Darthmouth/Halifax, Nova Scotia. I could also get CT40 from a St. John's, Nfld. station, and it may be OZ-FM, but I don't remember.

When I moved to Richmond, KY in fall 1991, there was Power 94.5 Lexington. The station then flipped to AC in spring 1992 and carried CC.

Then I moved to Indianapolis, IN, in the fall 0f 1993 and that was the best period for listening to Casey as I could listen to all 3 of his shows at the same time starting Nov 1994, although the signal may not always be strong from any of the stations. The weakest signal came from WINN 106 Columbus whee I could listen to CT40 in its entirety if I were lucky. I could catch CH20 from WLBC-Muncie, and CC from some station in Anderson on the 97.9 FM dial (can't remember the call letters). Eventually, WENS Indianapolis picked up CH20 in 1996, soon after, WINN dropped CHR for Oldies, thereby effectively dropping CT40 as well.

Finally, in 1997, I moved to Ottawa, Ont, where I listened to CT40 on CKKL, or Kool-FM 93 dot 9, as they called it then.

I could listen to this station at home, because it reached within a few miles of Cincinnati. It's a shame they didn't have AT40 in the Shadoe years though. I'm pretty sure there was a station on 100.1 in Lexington that did have AT40, but it had a weak signal, so I couldn't listen to it when the Cincinnati station screwed up AT40.

I think I know of this station. I believe that in the mid-'90s it was WXXP. I heard it on a road trip, and it sounded like super-soft AC.

In the Nations Capital, CT40 debued on opening weekend, Janurary '89, where it stayed until a format change in feburary 1992 (105 WAVA). It did not affect Shadoe Stevens as Shadoe was on Q107 at the time, where he stayed until they flipped to mix in Aug '90. Perimeter stations? I believe B104 in Baltimore switched directly from Shadoe to Casey until B104s demise in mid '91. CT40 was very briefly on 98.3 Star FM of Southern Maryland latter 1/2 of '91. I believe also in '91 CT40 was carried on 96.7 WQCM out of Hagerstown MD up until the end of 1992. Q94 in Richmond VA, also switched directly from Shadoe to Casey and Carried Casey continuously until Ryan Seacrest took over in '04 an even still carries AT40 today. I don't know when but probably in 1992, maybe earlier, Mix-106.3 of Easton MD (The eastern shore) picked up CT40 and carried it at least thru 1993, most likely cancelled it somewhere in '94 as I know by '95 it was gone.
CT40 was also heared throughout 1994 only on Z104 (Frederick, MD) which sort of could be considered a 'dc' station, since they were not allowed to air Rick Dees or Casey as long as a DC station was carrying the show (Z104 was filed away on a shelf in 1995). Parts of their former signal covered some dc suburbs. It wasn't until '96 when Z104 was reborn that it truely became a Washington dc station. And they decided to go w/ Rick Dees in '97.

At one time WENS ran Casey's Top 40. I remember hearing it on the weekend of March 10/11, 1990 and I remember Casey mentioning the station as one of the affiliates in early 1995. Was WENS running the show until they picked up CH20, or was there an era when there was no show running?

Seems that, since WENS was a light rock station, it would have been a logical choice to start running Casey's Countdown when it debuted in 1992, but apparently, that didn't happen.

I don't know the start/stop times of the shows, but I did hear CT40 on the following:

WAZY - Lafayette from 6pm to 10pm from 1992-at least early 1994.

Like psycboy, I was barely able to hear WINN out of Columbus, IN and get CT40 from Mid 1994 until the flip to oldies in 1996.

As for WENS, I'm not sure of their CT40 history. I certainly don't remember it in on the station in 1995, as I struggled to hear CT40 via WINN in order to keep track of the chart. Perhaps CT40 thought they were still an affiliate when in reality the station had dropped the show? Or perhaps they aired it a quite inconvenient time. I have a swiss-cheese memory so anything is possible. :-)

In New York City, Casey's Top 40 premiered on its premiere weekend (January 21, I believe) on WHTZ-100.3 Sunday mornings from 10am til 2pm. Near as I can remember, this was Casey Kasem's best-ever timeslot in NYC. I believe the best his AT40 years ever scored in NYC was Sunday mornings from 9a-1pm, but I'm not sure what timeslot(s) it aired on during the 1970s.

Anyway, I don't remember the exact dates of all of the following, but Casey's Top 40 eventually was moved to Sunday from 8am til noon on WHTZ, and then eventually to 6am til 10am on WHTZ, until they finally dropped it around November of 1994 when they flipped to an alternative format (they eventually switched back to CHR but never brought back Casey).

Around February of 1995, "Casey's Hot 20" premiered on WMXV, "Mix 105." It remained on that station until the format flipped to "The Buzz," I believe around 1997. It aired Sunday mornings from either 8am til 11am or 9am til noon, but I'm pretty sure it was the 8am start. Once they dropped the show, Casey wouldn't be heard again in New York City until 3/28/98 when "Big 105" (yet another format change for that same 105.1 FM frequency) aired the HAC version of AT20 Sunday nights from 8pm til 11pm.

You could pick up "Casey's Countdown" on a Westport, CT station, WEBE 107.9, in certain parts of the New York area. I could get it at my then-home in Northern New Jersey pretty clearly. They carried it Sunday mornings from 9 til noon. Not sure when they started carrying it, but they carried the show I think right through the AT20/AC years and bowed out (I believe) sometime around the start of AT10.

For what it's worth, AT40 aired on WPLJ during the CT40 years first at 8am and then eventually at 6am (the latter during the infamous "Let's butcher the show" years chronicled in Rob's book).

I spent a lot of time as a kid down at my grandparents' house on the Jersey Shore back in the CT40 days. I remember when CT40 first started, the local top 40 station, WJRZ in Manahawkin, NJ, carried AT40 Sunday mornings from 8am til noon and Casey's Top 40 Sunday evenings from 7pm til 11pm. I don't know exactly when they flipped to an AC format, but by 1992 they had. AT40 was gone and "Casey's Countdown" aired Sunday mornings at either 8am til 11am or 9am til noon. If you wanted to hear Shadoe on Long Beach Island (where my grandparents lived), you had to settle in those days for Eagle 106 out of Philadelphia, which carried the show at...are you sitting down?...1am Saturday overnight into Sunday morning.

Thanks for the memory jolt, bandit73. Yes, the Anderson station carrying CC in the mid-90s was WXXP or Experience 98, as they called their station. And I also loved Power 94.5 when it was a rock-leaning CHR station. Wasn't too happy when they flipped to AC.

From what I could piece together, WENS was an AC station but was AT40's affiliate for the Indy market during the 80s and also carried CT40 during the first couple of years or so. Never really understood why they broadcast the show (WZPL would've been a more logical choice), and as ulij20 mentioned, they could've picked up CC when it debut in 1992 but never did. So for a period of time, Casey was not heard on any Indianapolis station until WENS picked CH20 in 1996, which coincidentally was also when the station was evolving into an HAC format.

Now that I'm in Atlanta, I did some research on Casey airing in this market and found out that Power 99 (WAPW) aired CT40 from 1989 through 1992 before they flipped to Alternative. Star 94 (WSTR) broadcast it between 1993-5 before they dropped it in favor of Rick Dees Weekly Top 40. CH20 or CC was not heard in this market.

Overhere in Europe we have to thank Austrain (international station) "Blue Danube Radio" for presenting CT40 to the audiences

...and from 1990 'til 1995 (for those with satellite) you could hear it on VoA Europe - in superb CD-quality!! (I was unfortunatelly stup*D enough not to record the shows off VoA, hehe...)!

No CH20 was aired in Europe as far as I know, and none of stations mentioned above aired CBH either.

Only trouble with that Nenad, is the fact that (at least on some of the CD copies I have from VOA) they used to edit the show. You never heard Casey's into break teases and they often cut out some or all of the Request and Dedication letters.

For some reason, there's a great deal of information here regarding radio stations in Indiana. Well, here's more!

I was living in Fort Wayne, Indiana when Casey's Top 40 debuted in January 1989. Casey Kasem and American Top 40 had become a staple on Top 40-formatted WMEE-FM by the time he left the show. WMEE continued carrying AT40 once Shadoe took over.

But AC-formatted WAJI recognized Casey's ability to draw an audience and signed with WW1 to broadcast CT40 when the show debuted. In fact, the station built an ad campaign around Casey's return to a countdown show. The down side for WAJI -- listeners were still connecting Casey and WMEE, and writing that down in their ratings diaries. WAJI evetually discovered this and, during CT40 broadcasts, pointed out to listeners:

"You're listening to position 95.1 FM, our call letters are WAJI, and our name is Magic 95.1. Remember, in Fort Wayne, Casey's Top 40 with Casey Kasem is heard exclusively on WAJI, Magic 95.1."

I believe this effort was indicative of the battle in many markets between the two shows once CT40 hit the air.

That was the best... I wasn't much of an NFL fan back then, so Sunday afternoons were perfect for me. I was highly disappointed when they moved it again after less than five months.
