Most of the songs you mentioned on the first half of your list are now readily available to AT40 collectors who trade and collect those shows. Its interesting that you list "In The Mood" first. I vividly remember spending the night at a freinds house in early 1977 when AFN aired this show late one Friday night. So yeah,I got to hear that song right off the bat--its one and only week in the Top 40! I was 16 at the time. A year earlier I followed the chart action of Dickie Goodman's "Mr.Jaws" right up to its peak position at #4 on the Hot 100. "Hooked On Classics" was part of the Medley-craze back in 1981-82. You can thank The Stars on 45 hit for seeing so many of those type of tunes on the charts. But I followed that song each week, and was actually glad to see it hit the Top 10. Now in later years, and with nearly 700 shows on CD-R,I can revisit most of the 70's and 80's and look back on some of this stuff with the fondest of memories!

6/7. Earache My Eye/Sister Mary Elephant - Cheech & Chong If I'm not mistaken, "Sister Mary Elephant" really wasn't even a song! It was some hilarious comedy bit that consisted of someone yelling "SHUT UP!!!" every minute or so. It was unusual for AT40 because it wasn't even a music piece at all! Was this the one from the late '90s where the guy talks about solving math problems by chewing bubble gum? I always thought this always sounded really weird on Shadoe's countdown. It always kind of crept up without warning, with Shadoe sort of talking over the military-type intro of the song. Shadoe made a big deal of the title of the 2 Live Crew song when it first entered the countdown. It was kind of funny. Also, I'm pretty sure "Rubber Duckie" by Ernie (Bert's friend) made AT40 back when Casey hosted it. I'd love to hear what Casey said about having a song by a "Sesame Street" Muppet in the countdown! (When Kermit charted with "Rainbow Connection", it wouldn't have been nearly as funny, because Kermit wasn't exclusive to "Sesame Street" like Ernie was.)

That made Top 40 radio so appealing -- all types of recording genres were fair game, including spoken word records. About the time Cheech & Chong's comedic "Sister Mary Elephant" was on the Top 40, along came two spoken word versions of "Americans," a patriotic salute to the USA written from the perspective of a Canadian broadcaster. Two years earlier, Tom Clay's Top 40 hit "What The World Needs Now" was recorded with audio clippings of news events spotlighting the political assassinations of the 60s. Unfortunately Top 40 radio has evolved to a point where the variety it once offered is now gone. But fortunately we still have access to the best of the past to keep it alive!

To answer I own A Coy of the Rubber Duckie and Rainbow Connection songs and it's cool to hear Casey annocing them For the Ernie songs he teases with a song but someone who is not reand and the tease for Rainbow Connection was the first hit by a frog and he credits the songs to Kermit and his friend Jim henson. To answer another question yes The baz Luramnn hit (I finnaly got the right title) Everybody's Free To Wear Suncreen That talking about solving math problems while chewing gum. Most definatly the weirdest song on any the every popular now CD's.
One of the resons I would love to hear AT40 Use the BB (A man can dream can't he) it becuse of all the out of place songs that debut because of downloads such as
all the recent High School Musical songs The Two Grammy Songs from last year a) Across The Unniverse b) Cry Baby/Peace Of My Heart. Very few songs on AT40 these. If Ryan won't or can't use BB then why can't he use the Radio and Records chart. At least I can find a copy of that chart online every week before the show and van prove the information. A show where you can prove the info. that's something I can't with the right mind listen to. Ione of the major reasons I don't care for Media base 24/7 is they don'r publish there charts on line like Bb or R&R. they may however be used in compiling the R&R charts and if so my mistake but then wehy can't AT40 use R&R chart. I'm pretty sure they don't charge an arm and a leg like BB. Do They?

Simple. Premiere doesn't want obscure songs ranked in the lower 30s to appear on the show in order to please as many stations as possible, so they decided to do away with any recurrent rules. The result is a chart devoid of any variety which is the way most Top 40 stations are programmed these days.
By the way, the Baz Luhrmann spoken-word "song" from the late 90s is called Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen). I think it made it to the Top 40 because it was quite popular as a high school graduation song then. Can anyone confirm this?

Don't forget that AT40 used the R&R chart until Casey's last day as host. My guess is it was not an issue of cost...as those charts are still used for both of Casey's current shows, but rather they did not want Hour 1 of the show to feature songs that were never heard on the majority of affiliates. Then again, the birds in our yard are the only ones up early enough to catch Hour 1, and it's not like they care what songs are played

The result is a chart devoid of any variety which is the way most Top 40 stations are programmed these days. Did anyone notice that there were only four recurrents on this past weekend's chart (which corresponds to the February 3 R&R chart)? That's the lowest there has been since early November, 2004 when they did their one and only "chart purge" so far. The bad thing is, three of these recurrent songs have been around for more than a half a year, including "Scars" by Papa Roach, which looks like it'll have been on for a full year. So far, only one song has done that, which would be "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down. "You And Me" could also end up spending a whole year on the chart, since the song is in its 36th week on the chart and still close to the Top 20. Anyway, four recurrents is the record low without any kind of manipulation of the chart, such as a chart purge, ever since they stopped using the R&R chart on the second weekend of 2004.

Has the number one song on Ryan's AT40 ever been different than the corresponding R&R chart? I know the # 1 song of both 2004 and 2005 on the CHR AT40 were the same as the R&R Year-End chart. However, have the weekly shows ever had a difference? I don't think they have.

I think they have once or twice, but it was sort of hard to tell, since I'm not even sure which week they moved to being two weeks behind. But there has never been an instance where there was a song that was number one on the R&R chart but not AT40 and vice versa, which is more than we can say for Dees.

Yes, I can come up with several but I will give you just ONE. Hard Luck Woman by Garth Brooks. I was a big KISS fan in the younger days and was a 'closet' Garth fan in the 90's(at least I bought all of his CDs)so I was more than thrilled to hear him do a remake and learn that he too grew up on the great Rock that KISS produced!! It was played on CT40 in 1994 but since AT40 was already off the air in the USA by then I never did get to hear it until 10 years later when I found a copy on the eBay!!! ***Also, I should have cleaned the store out with Garth's The Hits Limited Edition CD from 1994. I see that it is a somewhat serious collectors item on eBay. Would've made a nice little ROI
