Hi,
This question is for WPLJ listeners in NYC. Actually, it is 2 questions:
1) First does anyone remember the syndicated show that came RIGHT before Shadoe Steven's AT 40 on Sunday morning's in late 1990 and early 1991? Shadoe was on from 9-1 during that time and the show I'm speakin gof came right before it. It wasn't a countdown. It just played music. When AT 40 moved to 8 am, it was cancelled from WPLJ.
2) The second question is about Rick Dees. What were the time periods that the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 was heard in New York City? Working backwards, I know WPLJ aired Rick's HOT AC version on Saturday mornings at 5am from late 1998 till early 2002. Then WHTZ picked up the CHR version and aired it Sunday mornings and then late Sunday nights. Now, WHTZ also aired the CHR version in the mid 90's, right. I know they aired it in 1995 and part of 1996. DID WHTZ AIR IT IN 1994? IF SO, I WISH I HD KNOW, I WAS STARVED FOR A CHR YEAR END COUNTDOWN in 1994. I also believe WPLJ aired RIck on Saturday mornings in 1991. Can anyone confirm?
thanks!!

I believe the show was hosted by the late Ron O' Brien-However,I don't remember the title-"Future Hits" would've been on WHTZ ("Z-100").

Big Ron hosted the syndicated "On The Radio". It was an hour long and distributed by Westwood One. Since I don't live in NYC, I don't know if that answers the original question.
I have some "On The Radio" shows. Some of them CD's given to me from Big Ron himself. Here's an example of one I've got:
ON THE RADIO - JANUARY 28, 1995; SHOW #95-05
Sukiyaki - 4PM You Want This - Janet Jackson If - Janet Jackson All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow Rain King - Counting Crows Take A Bow - Madonna Always And Forever - Luther Vandross Another Night - Real McCoy I Belong To You - Toni Braxton Always - Bon Jovi On Bended Knee - Boyz II Men
I know the show was on in 1989 as it aired before "Future Hits 89" on my local station on a tape recording I have. It lasted a long time too. I've got CD's from 1999 (the show wasn't hosted by Big Ron then).

Beat me to it. I was going to say On the radio w/ Big Ron. I believe he recently died didn't he? I can confirm the show was on the air as early as 1986. As it aired here in DC on B106. It may have in fact been on the air in '85 too. Earliest recording I have of the show is form '86. Likewise for Joel Denvers Future hits.

I used to listen to the show on KCLD 104.7 from St. Cloud, Minnesota on Sunday 7-8AM right before AT40. I have three vinyl shows from 1985 with the earliest 6-28-85. It was first put out by NSBA productions before being picked by Westwood One. I have about 20 vinyl shows from 1985-1991 plus some scoped "off-air" copies from 1985-86 on cassette (somewhere). I sent my vinyl copy of the Top 10 of 1986 to a huge Falco fan oversea because there was an interview with the late Falco. I don't know when the show debuted or when Big Ron left. Also, I don't know when Westwood One picked up the show, whom replaced Ron and when the show went dark. This is the late great Ron O'Brien. One day you have a nasty cold, the next thing you're in a hospital fighting for your life. He was working in Philadelphia and a fellow DJ said you should really have someone check you out for that cold. Tragic way to see his career/life end.

Late Big Ron O'Brien was a great DJ, one of the greatest for me. I listened to his afternoon drive show on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles in the '80s, which was just fabulous. You can find the tribute site on the website of WOGL-FM, a classic hits station (and an AT40 affiliate) in Philadelphia, where he did the afternoon drive until he passed away in spring, this year. wogl.com/pages/1074637.php

In the later years, I know the show was hosted by Jeff Davis (www.jeffdavis.com) and distributed by On The Radio Broadcasting. I would say thats just self distribution but the company distributed other programs too like Dr. Demento for a while. Seemed to be some kind of collection of a handful of programs that were no longer distributed by Westwood One. Heres the archived webpage that sold the show to stations and mentions some of their other programs: web.archive.org/web/19980111040404/otrb.com/ontheinf.htm

I would have said On the Radio, but the OP said it wasn't a countdown show. On the Radio did the top 5 every week so I assumed that wasn't it.
