Back in 1990, thanks to the movie "Ghost", Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" hit again. Along with the original version, Righteous Brothers released newly recorded version and charted. Both versions charted at the same time on the Billboard's Hot 100 separately. At that time, AT40 used the Billboard's Hot 100. Did Shadoe Stevens play the both versions every week during those songs in the top 40 simultaneously ? How about the situation on Casey's Top 40 and the Rick Dees' Weelky Top 40 ? They both used Radio & Records' chart back then.

I know on 11/3/1990, Shadoe played both versions. Not sure about the rest of the run where both versions charted simultaneously though.
R&R combined the two versions, so Casey and Rick only played one; on all the shows I've heard, the 1965 version was played (and a good choice on their part, as I found the 1990 re-recording to be rather inferior).

I remember at least one time that Shadoe did not play both versions, so his AT40 did it both ways.

Speaking of "Unchained Melody",last Christmas,I ordered the 50th anniversary of "American Bandstand" from Time-Life records-"Unchained Melody" was included-However,it was not the original version, even though the accompanying booklet states "Courtesy of Philles Records"-That was the label the Righteous Brothers originally recorded for-The version I heard must've been the one that Curb Records released in 1990-This version also features Bobby Hatfield as a solo artist.

I think that Shadoe played both when they first entered the countdown, but eventually he usually just played the older one, as did Casey's Top 40 and Rick Dees. That made sense, since that was the one that most radio stations played.
While the old version got most of the airplay, the newly recorded one got most sales, and under Billboard's Hot 100 methodology of the time they split points, leading to two versions that peaked in the top 20 (#13 and 19, IIRC). Radio & Records' combined points placed it at #3, which seems more accurate.

"Unchained Melody" was #1 on Billboard's weekly Adult Contemporary survey-Did it also top the Radio & Records AC survey?

The chart is based on radio airplay and a vast majority of the airplay went to the older version while the new version got the sales points (since they stopped printing the old version as soon as the new one was recorded). Had they not done a new version and kept the old version in print, the song probably would have gone Top 5 on Billboard. I do know that they combined the points for both versions for the year-end chart, and I think it ranked somewhere in the 40s.

Most definitely, as the original version reached #3 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. A cassette single release of that version might have even sent it to #1 (since the inferior re-recording managed to hit #4 in sales).

I think that Shadoe played both when they first entered the countdown, but eventually he usually just played the older one. . . I know he played both versions as late as 11/17/90, when both versions had already peaked and were falling. I found it to be particularly interesting that, of all songs to have multiple versions chart, it ended up being Unchained Melody, which had several versions (by different artists) in the top 40 at the same time in 1955.

I checked the year-end ranking of 1990, and found Billboard did not include "Unchained Melody" in the top 100. While AT40 compiled their own rankings, and they ranked the song at #39. I assume AT40 combined the points for both versions. Did Shadoe have any comments when he introduced the song ?

Yes and he said they combined the points from both.

It seems like there was one week when the 2 versions were so close to each other on the chart that Shadoe only played one.
As for individual stations playing "Unchained Melody" on their own time, I'm pretty sure WKRQ Cincinnati played the old version, while WLAP-FM Lexington played the new.

I'm doing some investigating... and, for the weeks where both versions charted and both weren't played:
10/27/1990: In place of the 1965 version, a montage of various versions of "Unchained Melody" was played 11/10/1990: The 1965 version was skipped
