As everybody knows that American Top 40 was innovative in many ways,
1. Answering Trivia Questions before there was Trivia Pursuit.
2. Mentioning statistics.
3. Teaser-Bio human interest stories.
4. The Long Distance Dedications.
But one other thing that AT40 was innovative with, but sometimes get overlooked, is when in 1979 they began each show by playing the previous week's Top 3 songs. Although this initially benefited listeners who tuned in late and filled air time, it evolved into a feature taken for granted today by some countdown shows. Today, many syndicated countdown shows begin with a brief listing of the previous week's top 3-5 songs.
