I guess it was on Nov/16/1985 shows when Casey mentioned that ZZ Top's 1974 No. 41 peaker "La Grange" was the biggest No. 41 hit so far back then (i.e. in 1985).
Anyone knows what's been the biggest to date?

"La Grange" was actually #33 on the 6/29/1974 AT40 when they had to record it earlier than usual so Casey could go to Hawaii to film an episode of "Hawaii Five-O". The staff had to guess what songs would likely be on the Billboard chart that particular week and out of 40 positions they only got three right ("Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot at #1; "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" by Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods at #2 and "If You Talk In Your Sleep" by Elvis Presley at #34). AT40 also prematurely assumed "Oh, Very Young" by Cat Stevens and "The Show Must Go On" by Three Dog Night would fall off the Top 40 and in place of the two added "La Grange" and "Keep On Smilin'" by Wet Willie which would debut on the actual Top 40 chart a week later.

One qualifier of note is that Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" actually made the top 40 in its first run in 1986, peaking at #26 (recently we heard an AT40-the 80s rebroadcast which included it.) It recharted in 1989 at #41 after it was heard in the film "Say Anything", with the iconic image of Lloyd Dobler standing outside with his radio.

I think the longest-running #41 song is "I Wish It Would Rain" by Gladys Knight. I believe that spent five weeks at #41. However, ever since the switchover, I have not kept track of the Hot 100, so it's conceivable that there was a song that spent longer in that position.
In AT40 days (when they went by the Hot 100, anyway), the song "After The Summer's Gone" by PC Quest spent three weeks at #41. I kept hoping that the song would hit AT40, since it was one of my favorites, but that was not to be.

Just curious, why are you boycotting Sunny 101.5?

Because they dropped AT40: The 80s in favor of Fighting Irish football games. Instead of moving the show to a new time, they just nixed it completely. So I don't listen to that station anymore.

Reviving the thread and recapping: The Cars and Elvis Presley get the shaft for their semi-popular hits at 3 a piece.
For longevity: Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" for 22 weeks. It also has the record for number of charted weeks to reach that position (19 weeks).
Most weeks by artist for those #41 hits: Kenny Chesney at 40 ("You Save Me" adding 08's "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" to the list -- 20 weeks a piece).
This subject could be a theme for Ron Gerber's crapfromthepast.com radio show (if it isn't already).
